First page, first post. Here's the link again:

three types of empathy

I think they boil down to imaginative empathy; intellectual empathy; and emotional empathy.

Oops! It's so cute and teeny, i missed it. Thanks!

Edit: Okay. Found it, took it:

Fantasy:11
Perspective-taking: 18
Empathetic Concern: 21
Personal Distress: 9

I also have to wonder what bearing personality has on this, especially after reading and contributing on the "Whats Your personality Type?" thread. Honestly, though, i have to believe based on experience that empathy can be taught and cultivated. I was certainly Aspie in this area as a child, but had a mother who taught me to learn to see things from others' points of view and why and when i needed to care. Ironically (or possibly not for an Aspie), i had no problem crying my eyes out for animals.

It is my personal belief that we don't lack empathy so much so as we just don't display it in "correct" and "acceptable" ways. As for me, I scored the mean almost the entire way through. Except on fantasy (higher).

Yeah, I just have problem responding in the proper manner and sometimes it doesn't hit me until later. Is that common?

Now that makes incredible sense. I do really recall times from childhood, though, when empathy was so obviously called for but i had no clue. They became significant emotional events and stuck in my memory because of the horrible reactions i got. Thankfully my mom just patiently explained things to me.

Totally common for me; i'm with you. If the person is very emotional, and i have not experienced whatever they are going through, i also sort of shut down because i have no idea what to do or say.

Eons old post, but I just found it. I've been thinking a lot about empathy lately and my lack of it. I'm having a hard time putting into words how I feel about people and situations, except to say that many times I find other people caring about things a great deal... and I have no emotions about the situation. Even situations I've been in myself at one point. I'm very aware of when I'm "faking it." and trying to pretend I care when in reality I don't at all. I don't do this faking thing well so I tend not to do it unless I absolutely have to.

If I can help fix a situation, or there is a solution, or I'm being asked for help in some way... then I can act like I care a lot, because I'm DOING something. But if the situation requires nothing from me, and I can't fix it... then I really have no emotions about it and find it hard to even muster up something polite to say.

I guess maybe I'm just an uncaring a$$h*l&

Not bad, I knew I wasn't lacking that much in empathy anyway I am at the normal man's level even though I am a girl. I knew my fantasy score would be the highest.

Fantasy - 19
Perspective taking - 22
Empathic concern - 21
Personal distress - 12

Although I couldn't understand some of the questions, since I've never been in the situations described for the question. Anyway, if my scores are reasonably accurate...
