Next time I hear someone say on a forum I go to they don't believe in AS or don't think it's real and it's just an excuse, bla bla bla, I will just tell them in sarcasm "All conditions are made up and not real, mental retardation is just an excuse to be stupid and lazy and act like a child, ADHD is just an excuse to be lazy and misbehave and lose all your things and not even try in school and get bad grades, Tourettes is just an excuse for rude obnoxious behavior and schizophrenia is just an excuse to make up stuff and be all weird and freak people out with your odd behavior, Bipolar is just an excuse to be a b***h and not work, Down syndrome is just an excuse to be lazy and stupid and look weird and be fat, yeah they all fake their problems."

I would love to see their reaction to that. Maybe they will get the real picture that we don't fake our problems or get the picture how real the condition really is because they would mind as well say that about all the other conditions out there and they would see how stupid they were. They have to be really stupid if they still don't get it after getting that sarcasm from me. Maybe stupidity should be a condition but then they would all have an excuse to be stupid.

But there is a difference between AS any many of these other conditions: you don't find hundred of articles saying "schizophrenia is not a disease nor a disabilitie, it is a difference" or diagnosing every historical person with down's syndrome.

I'd vote for telling those people that their opinion doesn't matter. (Just like everything else in the universe, but they don't need to know that. Let them think that it is them specifically who are insignificant.)

I generally reply that it's associated with bedwetting and walking on your toes, two (more or less) highly embarassing things I did for most of my childhood.* Most non-retarded people then realize, you don't brag about pissing the bed.

*I still walk on my toes. As for bedwetting, I did get incredibly drunk for the first time a few years ago, and subsequently pissed all over somebody else's carpet in my sleep. But ah, that's neither here nor there.

I like this, it seems like it would work on pretty much anyone who isn't a complete narcissist.

Is bedwetting associated with AS? I've never heard that before. (Other than bedwetting being linked to general emotional distress..)

I had what I thought was my best, childhood friend say on more than one occasion that I can't be trusted as a human being for taking meds, that I am comparable to what he considered the worst of my generation, and consistantly made fun of/commented on the many of my Aspie traits as being tremendously negative with the intent to make me feel like s**t. To be honest, he's a horrible person, and would love to see the day that his dream of becoming an animator fail completely (a goal he took directly from me, since he has no real personality of his own). Jesus, just thinking about how the people I've trusted and depended on basically tell me to suck it up and stop being such a p****, and that I'm horrible and worthless, makes me feel ill. My dad, my old best friend - I f*****g hate them. Real pieces of trash.

The sad thing is, they're both extreme cases of having severe dysfunction that impacts their quality of life. I may not be able to treat Asperger's, but they certainly could work on their ignorance and hatred of themselves. f*****g useless.

So do I... Annoys me so much... (its about ME though, not my kid as I don't have one!)

As for south park, I've found that they handle mental disabilities quite well (AS and autism aren't mentioned so far as I've seen) because with Tourette syndrome, Cartman faked it and got his comuppance when he lost control of what he was saying for real! With AD/HD there was an episode where all the kids in south park get diagnosed and the school chef says that they are overdiagnosing the kids with AD/HD and giving them all ritalin. The one you want to watch out for is Family Guy, they seem to make fun of everything and everyone without even slight remorse.

Yeah. I like the whole 'you don't exist then' thing!

Deep inside , I agree with them.

I have great doubts of the validity of its existence.

People who meet me know right off there's something up with me. No one ever accuses me of having a fake disorder because they can tell I'm not exactly like them. I've never had anyone say to me "AS isn't real" and probably never well though, theoretically, it could happen. In my case most likely it won't. I don't have to tell people something's different about me. They can see it first.
