Why do they need to shake hands when they meet/see someone? What the hell kind of significance does grabbing someone's hand have?

This is a hold over from the days when you offered you empty sword hand to another to show that you do not have hostile intentions. Why do we still do this? Hell if I know, it doesn't make sense to me either.

I don't understand why people are so scared of being seen in public eating alone ( or going to the movies).

Speaking of weird traditions like shaking hands, one thing I've never understood is the tradition of "blessing" someone when they sneeze. I understand where the tradition came from (medieval superstition about demons), but I don't get why people still do it. Why should there be an entire social interaction, an empty one at that, dedicated to the involuntary reflex action of expelling foreign objects from the nasal passages?
I just find the whole "bless you" meme to be really annoying, especially as someone with AS. What am I supposed to say, "thanks"? Because that's what I do say, but then it seems like people look at me funny for saying that. It's gotten to the point that I actually stifle sneezes when I'm in a group of people, just so I won't have to deal with the whole "bless you" awkwardness. Why can't I just sneeze in peace?!

Of course you could always go with the Seinfeld solution and say, "You're soooo good-lookin'!"

Spazzergasm: good question. This is an advantage left-handed sword-wielders and gunslingers had over right-handers, that they could offer their right hand as a sign of peace but still have their strong hand ready to strike or shoot. The origin of the word "sinister" means both evil and of the left side because of this advantage.

One trait I don't understand about NTs is the telling of long anecdotal and seemingly pointless stories in social situations. I hate having to sit there listen to a guy talk for ten mintues about his fishing trip, when he didn't ask me if I like fishing, but then still have to act interested...ugh.

really? that's very interesting. i love how the people on this site are just filled with random interesting information. i wonder if the lefties were ever viewed as bad or something- like redheads were.

i agree about the anecdotes. i mean, i'm sure some of the thinsg i say are the same for them...but really....must you go in extensive detail about the time you went running and realised after 5 minutes that your shoe had been untied?

I don't like the "NT" this so I will say "people" because I mean everyone.

Why do people feel the need to go birthday shopping for their family and then they go broke? Why do people think someone doesn't care about them when they didn't get a gift from someone? But however, if someone got a bunch of their family members gifts but didn't get one of them a gift, then understandable why that person be hurt.
I don't like the stress of having to go out and think about what to get someone or else my family is going to think I don't care so I don't get them anything anymore.

Why do people feel the need to do small talk if they don't like it either? Their stim perhaps?

Why do people feel the need to talk about things they are not interested in? Another one of their stims perhaps?

Why do people like being lied to? Low self esteem perhaps?

Why do people hate it when someone suggests their kid might have a mental condition when they talk about the problem their kid is having or the problem they are having with their child?

Why do people get upset and play the victim when they find out their victim had been talking behind their back and how they treated him or her? Why don't they go to that person and apologize for their behavior and then that person will apologize back and problem solved or if it was a misunderstanding, why not go to that person and tell their side of the story and apologize for how they treated that person and that person will apologize back for their behavior and problem solved.

Why do people feel the need to have lot of friends?

Why do customers need to feel needed by getting a greeting and being asked if they can help them find anything?

Why does my husband need to hug and touch me to make him feel better? Why does he need to say "I love you?"

Why do people drink and do drugs?

Why is there even body language and why do people need to rely on it?

Why do people need eye contact despite that you are going "oh" "uh huh" and asking them questions as they are talking to you?

Why do people refuse to listen to the other person's point of view about their conflict or someone's conflict? It's not that hard to understand.

Why do teens need to throw parties and it's not even their birthday?

Why must people yell at the TV as they are watching sports? The players can't hear them cheering at their house.

Why are people so bothered by harmless things like hand flapping, rocking, fiddling with objects, and other stims? Perhaps it's their own sensory issues?

Why are people against adoption? Do they support child neglect and abuse? Kids are better off with a family who will love them and take care of them than being with a family who will beat them or does drugs and can't even afford to take care of them so the child is starving and has no new clothes, etc. Do they also think people who are unable to have kids aren't allowed to have kids?

Absolutely, children were forced to write with their non dominant hand, because the left was considered to be "of the devil".

I don't completely understand why NT's feel the need to joke on people. I know they are trying to be funny, and expect humor in return, and I usually joke back just for the hell of it, but WHY?

High fives. NOT a fan. Often NT friends will have their hands out, and I will have no idea why. And then when I finally realize, I will wonder "and what was that for?".

I don't understand why people feel the need to play mind games. Are they that bored?

In those days one always wielded their sword with the right hand. To be left handed was not a good thing.

LOL! I don't get it at all. I always feel awkward when someone wants to high five me. Or any "cool" hand thing, really. The first time someone wanted to fist-bump me, I thought she was trying to hit me, or threaten me.
