I wonder if there's an Asperger's/thyroid link?

I haven't been here that long, and I've already seen a number of others say they have thyroid issues. Both hypo and hyperthyroidism can cause depression, mood swings, "brain fog"...

Complicating matters is the fact that the tests aren't reliable. Nevertheless, why don't u all get your thyroids tested? Just to satisfy my curiosity. ;)

I may be one of the "posters" who mentioned hypothyroid...One of the problems with the "I had it checked, doc says its ok.."Is that alot of DR are uninformed about what "normal" is...TSH level has changed from 5.5 to 3.3 to 2.3......many DR are going by old numbers.....they often dont do the more accurate test....freeT3, freeT4....only the TSH level....problem is that tour TSH numbers can be borderline or normal but your body is not converting the hormones in a way that the body can actually use them!!Well, DR , that seems kind of important....I hate to be paranoid but it eems that many DR dont seem to care about this issue because the medication to treat it is so inexpensive(about 10.00 a month)so the pharmicutical companys dont make any money on it...but they do make alot on the medications that are used to treat alot of the symptoms.....Anxiety,depression,IBS...

I know there are alot of very intelligent people here who normally question the "sanctity" of authority labels, like DR.....but it is difficult to question DR without offending their monsterious ego(bad personal experience  )...but there are so many side effects of wrong TSH levels(its a hormone that inter acts with other hormones and can cause over all body/mind inbalance)

there is a "thyroid disease chat center"....(I dont know how to but hurls on here, sorry)Yhay has alot ofhorror stories of real people being misdiagnosed and the impact it had on their lives...Please take this serious...get your actual test numbers from blood test and then go online and do some research...this is important!

Most doctors are pretty ignorant about thyroid issues.

I've been thru the doctor mill twice krex. Misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, and offered antidepressants both times - even though both times I insisted I was not depressed! The way they think is, if WE can't diagnose you, you're imagining it.

First time, I diagnosed myself (thyroid, tests were "normal"). Second time, it took 5 doctors and a naturopath (nat. was the guy who nailed it; Lyme, tests were "negative".)

Even if your thyroid has tested "normal", please check the checklists and see if your symptoms match up.

I have my own thyroid horror story. My mom had thyroid problems so when I was
about 13 she took me to the doctor to be tested. I told the doctor "I was tired all the time". He told me "get more sleep". The the thyroid test said I was "fine".
10 years later I went to a doctor(I wanted an anti-depressant). I told him I had
been depressed for 10 years. He asked "do you have a family history thyroid
problems I said "yes but I have been tested at 13 Im fine". He said "There has
only been a good thyroid test for the last 3 years(it was 1993). Well the test
came back I had hypothyroidism. Had the doctor listen to a 13 year kid I might
have avoided 10 years of deep depression.

No... far to subjective, even by looking at the title.

Rather then trying to make superficial links between aspergers and medical conditions maybe there should be more of a thorough analysis of the situation before any conclusions are reached.

Can anyone recommend a good site for getting your head around all of this? My mum has thyroid problems, as did her mum, and she often tells me to have mine checked. I hate those situations where you see your doctor - he says one thing, you think another, and you know you're right :)

If you & your Dr have a difference of opinion, print out reams of research papers from the net and show it to them. They LOVE that! :D /sarcasm

www.thyroid.org.au

is a really good site it goes into both hyper and hypo thyroid, and the blood tests to ask for.

Local anecdotes suggests a link between the mother having low thyroid levels and the child being ASD.
