Hey guys, first post here. I've been hunting for a little while for the best place to ask about something like this, and this community seems to be very nice and accomodating.

I've never been diagnosed with a mental disorder, nor have I ever asked about it. I was going through a few disorders and things on Wikipedia and realised that I'd never actually questioned some of my more unusual behaviours, the primary one being 'hand-flapping'. I've been doing this since I can remember, and when I do it I can use my imagination to dream anything up and then play through it like a narritive. I remember that I used to do sound effects as a kid along with it, but that seems to have dropped off. To be honest it's a fun experience that although is entertaining, seems to be out of the ordinary.

I was wondering if anyone else experiences this, and what the significance of it is. I've had OCD pretty bad for the last 6-8 years, and not necessarily depression but dark thoughts every now and then, along with being horrific socially lol. My parents took me to a pediatrist when I was a kid since I've had slightly poor coordination with the feet and hands, but they put it down to troubles at birth. Perhaps I'm just screwed up in the head, but at any rate it doesn't seem worth going to a doctor about.

Cheers

AS is not a mental disorder. It is a personality type that has fallen into disfavour.

That said, welcome to the board.

My apologies, I admittedly know little on the subject and don't know the distinction.

Oh don't take my word for it. That's just my opinion. Everyone has their own on the matter, and you'll be able to make your own mind up after a while. If you've only just received your diagnosis, or have particular troubles in life related to AS, you'll probably feel it's a mental disorder. But later on you might realise it's just your personality.

In any case, I think it's more empowering to think of it as part of your personality. It allows one to take full responsibility for their thoughts and actions.

Your description of hand-flapping and the mental narrative accompanying it describes me to a "T". I, too, lack co-ordination. The hand-flapping thing is at the very core of my aspe-ness.

Welcome!

Believe it or not, I can actully relate to that.

I hope you don't mind me saying this, but when you do that, it sounds like you're passing gas.
