Well, it depends on the individual, really. Some aspies are outright supremacists and believe that their AS makes them superior to others. They may be bitter about an experience with non-autistics and may have been victimised and treated badly as they were growing up. Others take pride because they feel as if they are stronger for being able to overcome the obstacles in their life and have learned to embrace and use their neurology to it's fullest extent.

Some aspies have pride in a similar way to gay pride. basically, these aspies are saying "if you [society] are only going to identfy my by my very nature [being an aspie] and if you have a problem with that, then guess what- I'n mot ashamed of it, in fact, I actually like being this way". These are a few reasons that I can think of.

The way I look at it is that all I know is this life and this is the only brain I will ever have. I have strengths and I have weaknesses. If many of my weaknesses come from AS then surely many of my stengths come from it too.

She said she hates herself too. I also have an aspie friend who dislikes 99% of aspies and he also doesn't like himself. He hates his AS. He sees it as a curse.

I'm proud of all the things that I've accomplished in my lifetime. I've graduated from High School, on the A-Honour Roll. I've held down a job that I hated, for three years, in the late 90s. I live on my own.

Guys, no matter what you say about AS, it will never go away. AS will always be a part of who you are. For me, AS is what helps me see a world others don't see. I would NEVER wish to be cured. I even wrote an essay on why the Spectrum shouldn't be cured.

Just accept it.
