misdiagnoiss of ASD
But this thread is somewhat peculiar where I may have concern. In any case, diagnostics are to be approached seriously, as stated. Too many confounding factors have been presented. BTW, I am female. I am uncertain if OPster is posing a question. I suggest this thread may not be prudent if OP is contentious.
Hiya, having just read the OP again and please understand I am not a doctor and so therefore cannot diagnose. However what I would say is that in my opinion it does sound very much as though you could be on the spectrum. Non prescriptive drug use could be said to be used as a 'self medication' and I have heard many many others on the AS admit to having dabbled in drugs, some more so than others. Who is anyone to judge the actions of others, certainly not me.
Did you have any speech delays in your early childhood? All you say in your OP sounds textbook to me! And if you are WELCOME!
The mimicing you describe is Echolalia, I am really naughty, I go into any accent, even if someone is getting offended I don't notice! And I would suggest that noone on the spectrum is pure anything. It may be that you are Aspergers with some ADHD or even some ADD? I have never met a pure asperger, adher or autie yet. There is always something else to confuse us! Most have signs of other conditons such as OCD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Semantic Pragmatic Disorder, Central Auditory Processing Disorder, Oppositional Defiance Disorder....the list goes on and on...so even if you look up Aspergers and see some likeness, check out other spectrum conditions and there will be some traits that you identify with too! So we are all DIFFERENT but unique too.
What you are telling us is that you experience a lot of things that most of us on the spectrum do, some more so than others of us. I hope you find some comfort and identity soon, you deserve that.

Well the side of the brain most used for visual thinkers is the right hemisphere, I believe. The left side is the mathematical logical side. It would make sense to me that your would have trouble with math if you are a strong visual thinker.
I don't know if you are going to get a definite answer for your question just from replies to this thread. You should spend some time in the forum looking at other posts and using the search function. I did that for a couple weeks before I joined last month. It gave me an idea of whether I may be on the spectrum and educated me quite a bit about AS and autism. I hope that your research gives you some answers and a little peace of mind.
Your original post was very confusing and there was so much to read through and put together that I am sure it confused people, and that is why I could see what Labpet was talking about. The real crux of the matter was that you believe a personality disorder could explain the symptoms that got you the Asperger's dx. If you look around a little more you will see that Asperger's is often misdiagnosed as BPD and other personality disorders. I don't know how often the opposite is true.

Hiya slikk, well the fact that you had no speech delay and a fairly precocious speech would indicate to me (remember I can't diagnose but I do have a professional qualification in Autism) the perhaps your foundation (meant in the nicest way ) would be Aspergers Syndrome.
Remember that the diagnosis is young and has only been in DSM 1V (that is the diagnostic manual for doctors, gives them all the criteria to diagnose!) since 1993/4. You could perhaps find that before that many could have been misdiagnosed as Schizophrenia. Often with ADHD especially ring of fire rapid cycling it gets mistaken for Bi-polar. Indeed I was diagnosed as this before I kicked up a stink and demanded they rethink!
It is interesting that you think in weight. My colleague also sees letters as weights so it is not uncommon. Thinking in pictures is a topic very familiar to Temple Grandin, check it out! So for me anyway (my opinion!!) its a big warm welcome to the spectrum.

I think you fit the bill perfectly. As far as the nerd thing goes I think you are one in the sense of having really intense narrow interests that are unrelated to any social benefits. Forget what you think about the way nerds dress. That's just a stereotype. I've always been a nerd, but learned not to dress like one and in fact had certain fashions as a special interest for a while. I still act and talk like a nerd ("actually, as a matter of fact, that is not quite true, here's the research blahblahblah..." in the middle of people's chit chat), but I don't look like one.
You're talking like AS is some kind of thing that exists all on its own! It's not; it's just a description of the way a rough group of people's brains work. It's not like having a cold or something, where the cold virus exists as a separate entity; it's more like being male or female, where the trait is a part of who you are. So you look at the list of traits; you ask yourself to what degree you match it; and you decide whether "Asperger's" (or "Autistic", which is the broader category) is a good name for what you already are.
