Do any high functioning autistics or Aspies consider themselves religious? By religious, I don't mean spiritual. It is easy to be spiritual and remain alone and isolated. I mean religious as in going to church, temple, mosque etc. regularly and being involved in church activities, groups, etc.

I consider myself agnostic, but I also believe there is a higher power of SOME type and studying the Bible on my own was a Aspie obsession of mine a few years ago. I may have joined a church at some point, but it is just the matter of sharing (i.e. fellowship) with others that I cannot take. I would make a great church of myself and two friends, but anything beyond that is near impossible.

It seems that church-goers are the more NT people in the world. They seem to demand mutual support and empathy. If there are any WP'ers who attend churches (IF any), how do you do it?

I don't believe in "religion."

The spiritual aspects I'm ok with. The rest of the "rules" are a transparent attempt by Humans to rule Humans. And I don't know why "religious" Humans don't see it.

Churches regularly. I did it as a child, because I was forced to.
Into my teens and until about 20 because of the brainwashing.

That of course is why i'm insane.... But now more to the point, I could never want to go into one. Even if it were empty. And even if for some reason I wanted to go into one... I couldn't go into one.

Save your sanity... avoid those places.

I am a Catholic. I go to mass pretty regularly but on slow days so I can sit alone. Not involved with any groups or anything. I enjoy the quiet of the church, flickering candles, incense and the sun coming through the stained glass windows. Very peaceful. Don't know if I'm religious or just enjoy the environment.

I think it is very possible that there is a higher power that guided evolution. I am also certain that when I die, I will be reincarnated, I cannot fathom eternal life or the opposite, nothing, happening to me when I die.

But that being said, I only believe in those 2 vague concepts. The more specific doctrines, I am turned off to. I will never set foot in a Catholic church, first off I disagree with their politics, and also I have a very hard time believing that all of their rituals have the slightest connection to reality in them.

The way I am, I do not have the power to know for sure if religion is real or not, that's why I am agnostic. That does not make me atheist, there is a difference.

I'm ethnically half Jewish, and my mom's mom was a Lutheran and her dad is a Hussite.

I consider myself Agnostic but possibly with slight leanings toward Judaism & a bit of Buddhism. Raised Lutheran & went to Catholic school for 1.5 years and now (not meaning to offend anyone) honestly can't stand any orthodox/generally accepted Christian teachings.

Here's my favorite quote that sums up how I feel about organized religion.

"Religion is a defense against the experience of God"
Carl Jung

I am by nature an agnostic (perhaps a gnostic agnostic); but that aside I think I have never felt more alien than in a church.
I felt that way even when I was a little girl in black patent leather shoes.
I have picture of myself at about 4 or 5 dressed up for Easter and my expression would curdle milk.

When I was a boy and went to church with my mom, I would just look around at the others and I felt really out of place. The congregation would be in some kind of harmony with each other, they would all engage in the same activities and I felt embarrassed for them, while it made me realize that I was very different. Actually, church was probably my first realization that my brain worked differently... andI realized that I never want to go again.

Are their any aspies/auties who are comfortable in and/or enjoy the church environment?

I've labeled my self an agnostic atheist. I personally don't believe in anything but I don't think that means that there IS no higher power, I have no way of knowing that.

It's really all a joke to me, but when I say that I'm not mocking religion by any means. I get sad and kind of angry when I see people do that. As long as people who are religious are doing it for the right reasons I think it's a good thing. I would never insult someone for doing something that makes them feel good about their life.
