At least it's less depressing than the news story that gave the author the idea for the film. Ben X was inspired by the teenager with asperger's who killed himself by jumping off a castle.

Oh I always thought it was a train. And yeah I guess it is less depressing, because the film is fictional. But the news story isn't obviously.

Well, plus, the film has a MUCH happier ending than "and then they bullied him so much he killed hmself, the end." The ending feels a bit contrived to me (I don't want to say too much about it because I hate spoilers) but definitely MUCH more optimistic than real life.

I forgot to mention Forest Gump & there was an Adam Sandler movie where he pretended to be different so he could enter the Special Olympics ; I forget the tittle thou. I know the movies I mentioned so for wer not about AS but they wer lower functioning,
I've heard of Adam before but only online. I've never seen a single trailer for it. I don't think any of the theaters around here even showed it. It's like my area is living under a rock when it comes to movies or any kind of media attention or knowledge about things like that

I liked Mozart & the Whale. The characters were quirky & interesting rather than just stereotyped traits. Although i know it may not be a very realistic portrayal.

The hospital scene where they play up the flickering fluorescents was apt.

There's a scene where they play up the flickering lights? I've watched the movie five times and didn't notice that. Maybe the playing up of the lights just seems normal to me because fluorescents bother me (but fluorescents in films and show don't bother me, probably because of the way they're filmed. Though I hadn't noticed that they don't bother me until responding to this post and thinking about it.)

I'll have to watch for the fluorescent light scene next time I watch the film. I wonder what else the director did to convey a sense of AS that I just didn't notice because my entire life is like that anyway?

hm. well, i figured it was a deliberate focus on the lights - next time pay attention when she goes into the hospital and see what you think.

a similar film moment that comes to mind is the final scene in Punch Drunk Love which if i remember correctly has the characters blindingly backlit by the sun coming in a warehouse door. i think of it often.

Not a movie but a TV show in the US called "Monk." He's obsessive, drives everyone crazy with his quirks and compulsions, uses his unusual perceptions to solve mysteries. I think he's the first TV character on the spectrum.

Monk "just" has OCD and about a million phobias (he also has depression, as he constantly says he's never happy and he doesn't find joy in things).

His quirks and insensitive nature are in line with someone who has OCD.

Yeah, I don't perceive him as being on the spectrum either. Some TV characters that seem more aspie like to me are Sheldon on the Big Bang Theory (but we bring that up all the time on here, lol) and Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds.

Out of the AS films I've seen, my favorites would be Mozart and the Whale and maybe Silent Fall. I didn't care for Adam too much. I really, really want to see Ben X but can't find a place to watch it online (or a place to download it). I'll get around to buying it sometime I guess, but I would love to go ahead and watch it. I bet I would love it if they turned John Elder's book into a movie.

I've only seen "The Big Bang Theory" once, but Sheldon came off as a bit too selfish for my taste. AS lack of empathy is often confused with selfishness and in my opinion a character like Sheldon only enhances that image.

If you have a Netflix account, it's a watch-it-now there.

I disagree, actually. Though I did like the film, I think the fact the main character is a savant is rather stereotypical of autism in the media.

Adam is an Aspie film I like, because it's not exaggerated and it's generally what I'd call a good film - in fact, it's one of the only romantic films I can honestly say I like. I'd probably say that it's my favourite one out of the ones I've seen so far.

You didn't think Adam was exaggerated? Really? I thought that character was almost every aspie symptom dialed right up in one person. We all have more or less symptoms but Adam seemed like a very extreme case.

Nice enough movie though.
