Asperger's and Sarcasm

*This* right here is so true of me, as well. I get incredible anxiety if I can't get a definitive answer from the sarcastic person.

i often get sarcasm. it's teasing i don't get. i always take it very seriously.

"Are you busy, Arthur?"

"Busy?" Arthur asked unbelievingly. "I've only got all these bulldozers to lie in front of or they'll knock my house down, but no, I'm not busy. Why do you ask?"

It's the darndest thing; I have a hard time deciphering sarcasm and every time I try to be sarcastic(try to play their own game), people then think I'm being serious and can't tell that I'm being sarcastic. Lose, lose.

I can be plenty sarcastic. I have trouble understanding it from others though.

My favourite form of humor!

The only thing that kept me from being pummeled so much in school was my understanding of humor. I've used lots of sarcasm when i joke with people, but one thing i've noticed is that not ever NT person "gets it" either...

Sarcasm, how well i knew thee..

Umm, watch lots and lots of Soaps and lots and lots of movies when i was younger to try and get a handle on these over emotional inconsistent illogical crazies that were infesting my world.

So, i learned and i learned to love sarcasm, i find its even better when i fail and they look at me with that obviously "..was that sarcasm?" look.

Ha confuse me will you world! take that! my occasionally indecipherable dead pan Aspie sarcasm!

It's weird because I can be a very sarcastic person haha.
I'm good with "getting" sarcasm from people I know really well, because I grow to understand their mannerisms and learn which voice means sarcasm, etc. But oh man, it's actually embarrassing how bad I am at picking up on sarcasm from strangers...

I was just in a summer course for forensic anthropology, and almost everyone on my forensic team had this problem haha. We all would joke about it. It was literally everyone on the team, even though there were only two aspies (me and one other girl).
Every day:
Person 1: *sarcastic remark*
Person 2: No, it's actually like *long explanation*
Person 1: I was joking.
Person 2: Oh ok *sarcastic remark*
Person 1: Wait what? *long serious response*
Person 2: ...I was joking too.

True. My sarcasm can at times be seen as cruel, but I think people just take it the wrong way. I've seen fights break out between people when one person took sarcastic comments the wrong way.

With me I can get sick of sarcasm. Sarcasm is just a weaker form of lying and telling myself over and over again that it's not serious can be tiring. My sarcastic comments are usually impulsive and I often think why I would even say those things. But I do it in moderation so I'm not a hypocrite.

Some sarcasm is just not funny at all. I suppose it is subjective. When I don't laugh people think I am taking it seriously but I'm just not giving in to their lameness.

My husband and one of my two close friends use a lot of sarcasm and there are many times that I dont catch it. They are usually nice about it and try not to laugh at me. My brains first instinct is to take things literally.
I am also usually slow to get jokes and sometimes there are jokes that I never understand and even after someone explains the punch line.....its not funny!
However I do love puns and find them hilarious!

I've really never had any problems with taking things literal. In fact, I use humor, irony and sarcasm on a daily basis, and they sure are powerfull tools. Using different kinds of sarcasm and irony, you can get out of pretty much any 'social trap' without looking/feeling awkward.
