I'm likely going to get some medicines against anxiety/tension soon. I wondered if I could do yoga instead. Anyone know if it's possible to get the same effect from that as from medicines ?

can't coment on comparing yoga to meds... but by all means, give yoag a whirl! it is very stress relieving and helps me sleep a lot more regularly. there are many kinds of yoga. i like asthanga, as it does more poses and stretching... but there are more medative kinds too.

If you haven't tried yoga, you should. For me, I find that it does help with anxiety in that it really relaxes me and I sleep better. I also do meditation on my own, and I feel less stressed when I do that.

I think there is a corelation to body tension and anxious thinking...they kind of feed into each other...when I get the physical signs of panic...my brain starts scanning for dangers and that leads to more negative thinking which causes my muscles to tense more...viscious circle...so,yes,its worth trying.

It didnt take all my anxiety away but I wasnt willing to take meds(hate the side effects)...you can actually do both....and if the yoga helps you can decrease or discontinue the meds.I have to say,I wasnt very good at yoga....anxiety really makes my mind wander and I could never do this "meditation" yoga...only the stretching poses...also had difficulty with getting my breathing right...It works better for some then others but you have nothing to lose by trying it....

I will try it. There's a yoga-center just down the street from me which starts beginner lessons next week. They practice 'Tantra Hatha Yoga', which seems to be a mix of meditation and stretching. Should be interesting.

Yoga's great for stress. Even better, study Qigong. It's very easy to learn the basics and it's mostly meditation and deep breathing exercises. Practice 15 mins a day and the stress melts away.

If only I'd follow my own advice & remember to do it every day!

I found Aikido helped me feel better. Too bad I'm too lazy to do it anymore.
