A bad idea to start and not too good a coping strategy.

But then, show me a human on the planet who doesn't have harmful coping strategies, and I'll show you either an infant or a person in a coma.

Smoking to cope with what, exactly? Smoking'll just bring you more problems.

Problems like chronic pneumonia. They won't like you any better if you smoke.

Nowadays people my age avoid smokers anyway. It's not even that "cool" to smoke anymore.

Not the best, but not the worst coping method in the world. (Crack or heroin would probably be worse...) If nicotine were uniquely helpful to someone they could always try the patches and avoid the lung-munging effects of the smoke.

I think it could be seen as a stim or a stim substitute.

Probably not the best idea as a coping strategy.Unless you want emphysema and other forms of cancer.

depends on how much you're smoking- you dont say how many a day, so its hard to tell. not a brilliant idea, though, as its expensive and unhealthly.... having said that...

ive recently resumed smoking a little- luckily I can smoke 10 a day for a week, then none for 8 months, so I might understand a bit.

I feel calmer while I smoke, and shortly afterwards, but it certainly doesnt linger into the next day.
I LOVE cigarettes, though- there is nothing like a nice glass of wine and a marlboro light, after a meal involving pizza, and possibly chocolate. mmmyummmmm mnnn om nom nom.

when i go out and drink with a friend I can smoke almost continuously- its like sipping wine... just constantly wanted because its so nice.

but I know im unusual- I really do savour each cig.

Same here, and when all the latest anti-smoking propaganda began many years, a psychiatrist somewhere wrote an article about certain patients/clients doing far better while being allowed to smoke.

I began smoking after acting on some simple curiosity at age 27, and that late start now leaves it possible for me to continue without trouble even at 60. I never recommend smoking to anyone, but I do have nothing but contempt for self-righteous critics. I will not blow smoke in anyone's face, but I just might tell a self-righteous critic of a smoker to go blow some up his or her ass ...

Smoking is something I would simply never consider due to how bad it is for your health, but even something like drinking, which is something virtually everyone does, I can't bring myself to do. I was never social enough to encounter drinking before I was 21 (or after, for that matter), and I could never reconcile in my head that something that wasn't OK for me to do before I was 21 was suddenly OK. I don't have a problem with drinking and people who drink (most people in my family drink to some extent), but I think I would just feel some tremendous guilt if I ever did. It just wouldn't be "me." So yeah, I don't understand how people can transition from being non-smokers or non-drinkers to doing either. I don't know if this view is common on the spectrum.

Cigarettes, in my opinion are disgusting and I wouldn't smoke them to cope with the stress. I've found that chewing gum for me helps me out with coping with some of my stress, and makes it slightly easier for me to talk to people. I guess it's because I'm not 100% focused on "oh crap, am I gonna screw up this conversation too?" "what do I say?" etc. And it's also healthier to chew gum than to smoke cigarettes. It's a good alternative.

The smoke can be annoying and even harmful, and even I hate the odor of ashtrays and butt buckets. But in and of themselves, tobacco products are actually usually sweet-smelling and even alluring ... at least until lit!

From people who complain so much about being pushed into molds, anti-smoking rhetoric is hypocrisy!

So, now we are talking about coping? Not curing?

How is a destructive narcotic that cause health problems for you and piss off other people by its mere existance and cost others money by tax and healthcare, going to solve problems? You can just as well suggest to people to smoke crack!

No one has said it will.

No one has even suggested smoking tobacco.

The OP suggested by WRITING (he/she didn't SAY anything) that smoking would solve problems temporarily by allowing the person to "cope".

Open your eyes and reread the damn topic.
