I have no idea in which forum this one would go, so I just went with general discussion.
I have a really hard time driving a car. I got my license after doing the driving course twice, and I only did it because my parents believe that it'll be easier for me to move around if I drive, as opposed to taking public transport.
But I've had the license for a couple of years now and not once have I driven since. It makes me nervous and anxious to drive.
Does anyone else have a problem with driving or is it just me?

I don't, and that's because I don't drive.

And will probably never drive.

It's too much of a hassle. Too many people have cars already. Besides, I'll just wait until cars can drive themselves in 10 or 20 years.

I drive because I don't have a choice when I need to get anywhere, but I seriously HATE it worse than just about anything in the world.

Its an acquired skill. It gets easier the more you do it. Everybody's nervous in the beginning.

Once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. The car will become an extension of your own body and you'll lose most of that anxiety, unless you get in a traffic snarl or find yourself driving in an unfamiliar area. I still don't like driving in a strange city without a navigator to read the map and watch for street signs, but in familiar areas, I don't even think about it.

I have a permit right now, and I tried not to get anxious. Yet sometimes I make a turn too fast, I forgot some of the basic rules like using a turn signal, and have a hard time multitasking. It's hard trying to think in seconds while your driving. It's mainly because I'm inexperienced and just learning, but I hope I get passed the "inexperienced" part soon.

No, it isn't just you, simply-me. I have a problem with driving as well. I don't mind getting INSIDE a car, but the idea of driving fills me with so much anxiety, that I can barely think straight. I worry that something bad might happen because of it. Therefore I am not going to drive.

We should sticky this topic, seriously.

I cannot drive for a few reasons (mentioned on other threads). I suppose that I could given a enough practice time and supervision, but I have neither, and even if I could do well enough to pass a road test, I would not feel safe in some situations.

My aunt never drove because it was simply too stressful for her. My mother suspects it may have been because as a child my aunt was often in the car with her father, who was a dreadful driver, when he had a number of accidents.

I'm firmly of the opinion that if someone doesn't feel confident in their ability to drive, then they shouldn't. There is too much of a risk of causing harm to themselves, or worse, to others.

I took Driver's Ed when I was 17, but I dropped out because I had a really bad experience there. Two years later, I still haven't taken anymore Driver's Ed. I don't know if I'll ever take up the initiative to learn to drive, but at the present, I have no plans to do so.

Because of this, my parents have signed me up for use of a transportation service for people with disabilities.

I have huge trouble with doing manoeuvres, due to my poor spatial awareness. General driving is okay, and it's something that you have to practise a lot. Driving does get easier, but some people learn a lot quicker than others. Just give yourself time and keep persisting :)

been stuck with my permit for the past 5 years. Parents too lazy to take me out driving and s**t.

I am actually a good driver (driven with friends on occasion). Just I cant parallel park due to the fact even with mirrors and what not, I cant judge tiny distances at all (IE 1ft or less). Nowadays my parents current excuse why to not take me driving. Gas is too expensive to waste on s**t like that. Also there is no possible way for me to even afford lessons just for parallel parking. Maybe if my Disability checks started up again perhaps, but since the country is nothing but a giant bureaucratic cluster f**k, I dont see that happening.

I hate driving...slowly. I have to have the stereo loud and going fast for my brain to be stimulated beyond boredom and depression. But I have confidence in my skill and car itself as well. I have a step-cousin who has too much anxiety to drive. I'm not one for irrational fears though. Study how to drive and practice in a big empty area until you gain confidence. Since the fear you mention is based on the lack of esteem in your driving ability, just get good at it. I'll admit I was terrible at first and nervous but I had no choice cus my relatives forced me to do it. And lately I been having to live in my car because my family is all as*holes. So I'd be really screwed if I let anxiety win.

for the others, I have bad eyes and had problems with small distances too.

There are many many idiots on the road, and so yes, when you first start driving it can be kinda nerve racking. Of course, I'm from near Grand Rapids, MI which I'm pretty sure has some of the worst drivers in the Midwest. They tailgate, they cut you off, never use turn signals, etc

I have learned to drive at non-peak times or else I'll have a meltdown over how dumb and annoying and selfish everyone else is...lol
