I never used to be sensitive to sounds when I was little, but as soon as I reached about 13 or 14, I started becoming worse. But because I was born with a deformed eardrum, and was half deaf, I've had loads of operations as I was growing up, and my last one was at 13. The doctors did a wonderful job, and now I can hear better than I always could, but the doctors still couldn't get my innards in my ears to be perfect - which has left me with highly sensitive ears. If a sound reaches a high pitch, it can literally damage one of my ears and leave me with an ear infection.
The doctors said my ear problems aren't to do with AS - they are to do with the deformity inside my ears, so my sensitive hearing is worse then all yours, and is affecting my whole life.
Noises don't worry me - they just damage my ears so much that I've got to avoid going to places where there are going to be high-pitched sounds. I don't like sudden noises anyway, but the most racket I hate of all is loud toddlers screeching.
I feel embarrassed to cover my ears in public, so I have to tolerate it. And putting an ipod on doesn't help because I can't have music on too loud, because it will damage my ears.
The only reason why I can't tolerate noise is because of my ear problems - it's not because of AS. Here's the noises I've been advised to try and avoid because of the prevention of getting an ear infection:-
-Loud brats screaming
-Dogs barking right near me, especially with high-pitched barks
-Dishes and plates clanging together
-Loud squeeky brakes in vehicles
-Sirens/smoke alarms
Here are the sounds that don't hurt my ears, but just generally annoy me:-
-Cars bibbing
-Murmuring TVs in other rooms
-Motorbikes revving
-Footsteps above me
-Doors slamming
-Kettles
-Loud sneezing and coughing
-People making a loud noise when they yawn
Here are the sounds what I can tolerate:-
-People chattering
-Engines on buses/lorries
-Fans
-Balloons/party poppers
-Fireworks
-Clocks ticking loud
-Fairground noises
-Car alarms
-Weather noises (eg thunder, wind, rain)
-People chewing, slurping, crunching, ect
-Drills, (eg dentist drills)
-Lawn-mowers
-Hoovers
