i hate kids so much because they are so damn noisy. they literally hurt my ears. my sister lives next door too and her kids are over here all the time and it kills me and nobody else understands it:(

i used to cry every time the siren went off at the firehouse when i was a kid

i also used to cry at amazing grace. my sisters would play it and i'd cry and they'd laugh. yep, my family sucks lol

i dont mind train horns but seeing as i work in that industry i hear them all the time and if i dont expect it i jump a mile. ive worked there for ten years and im the only one who reacts that way. i was only diagnosed a year ago so it's nice to know why i'm the only one who jumps whenever someone blows a horn

I never used to be sensitive to sounds when I was little, but as soon as I reached about 13 or 14, I started becoming worse. But because I was born with a deformed eardrum, and was half deaf, I've had loads of operations as I was growing up, and my last one was at 13. The doctors did a wonderful job, and now I can hear better than I always could, but the doctors still couldn't get my innards in my ears to be perfect - which has left me with highly sensitive ears. If a sound reaches a high pitch, it can literally damage one of my ears and leave me with an ear infection.
The doctors said my ear problems aren't to do with AS - they are to do with the deformity inside my ears, so my sensitive hearing is worse then all yours, and is affecting my whole life.

Noises don't worry me - they just damage my ears so much that I've got to avoid going to places where there are going to be high-pitched sounds. I don't like sudden noises anyway, but the most racket I hate of all is loud toddlers screeching.
I feel embarrassed to cover my ears in public, so I have to tolerate it. And putting an ipod on doesn't help because I can't have music on too loud, because it will damage my ears.

The only reason why I can't tolerate noise is because of my ear problems - it's not because of AS. Here's the noises I've been advised to try and avoid because of the prevention of getting an ear infection:-

-Loud brats screaming
-Dogs barking right near me, especially with high-pitched barks
-Dishes and plates clanging together
-Loud squeeky brakes in vehicles
-Sirens/smoke alarms

Here are the sounds that don't hurt my ears, but just generally annoy me:-
-Cars bibbing
-Murmuring TVs in other rooms
-Motorbikes revving
-Footsteps above me
-Doors slamming
-Kettles
-Loud sneezing and coughing
-People making a loud noise when they yawn

Here are the sounds what I can tolerate:-
-People chattering
-Engines on buses/lorries
-Fans
-Balloons/party poppers
-Fireworks
-Clocks ticking loud
-Fairground noises
-Car alarms
-Weather noises (eg thunder, wind, rain)
-People chewing, slurping, crunching, ect
-Drills, (eg dentist drills)
-Lawn-mowers
-Hoovers

I HATE taps dripping. It drives me nuts and I have to stop the noise. Unfortunately I have some plumbing problem I can't afford to fix in the kitchen right now and the tap is constantly dripping. Grrrr. It's any kind of repetitive ticking or tapping really, though. Clocks annoy me, as does the ceiling fan tapping when it spins.
People chewing with their mouths open also drives me nuts.

I hate the noise of something that pops because the noise would just go on and on inside my head to the point it feels like a bomb inside me.

I also hate the sound of running water coming from the upstairs unit, especially when it's early morning or when everyone is away, since that pretty much means the toilet flapper didn't settle correctly... I'm paying for the water.

Unwanted singing/unwanted talking. It's like having someone else's vocal chords swimming around inside your body.

It's sickening. People probably think it's over the top to say this but from my perspective it's comparable to rape. :?

Also, pencils. The sound of them writing is like having someone shaving the bones in your spine with a rough metal "file". (Like a nail file, but a more sturdy tool version)

Trying to write with a pencil personally is impossible. It's like being electrocuted. (I have touched an electric fence before, so that's not an exaggeration)

In primary school I would always steal the teachers pens because we were all forced to write in pencil, and I'd always involuntarily make a sucking noise from between my teeth in reaction to the sound of other people's pencils, kind of like the way people react if they accidentally cut themselves, except it was constant, and I couldn't stop. It didn't go down well.

The only good thing about high school was that you could use pens without getting shouted at. Except in math. Where you'd still get shouted at.

I hate the sound of a distorted sound, like when people play their music too loudly and it distorts it. Even if I hate the music, I can stand it if it isn't reaching the necessary dB levels to be distorted because of the hardware not capable of producing all the frequencies. I'm really picky about sound, as music has been my thing. Though I've never ever been to a concert before!

I also hate fire alarms. One of the largest high schools I've gone to was pretty exhausting every fire drill day. And we had them monthly! The whole school's fire alarm system could be heard 2-3 miles out. Inside, it was really nerve racking and the 2-10 mins it took to get out were exhausting. Everyone always complained about me covering my ears saying it's not that bad! BUT IT IS!

Same here. My bedroom is downstairs in our house (because I don't want to share with my brother) and my mum's room is directly above mine. She has no underlay under her carpet, and so I can hear every move she makes. It's not that it's loud - it's just at a tone what my ears can't take. They start popping in a funny way which makes me dizzy. And if mum opens a drawer, I can feel the irritating vibration. I know that one day my ears are going to literally explode.
