whenever i step into asda, tesco (walmart etc) im so confused by all the different colors and stuff - like i know they're like that to make people stay longer & spend more etc - but it just confuses me and makes me want to get the hell out ASAP. and hundreds of people (mostly delinquent parents and out of control kids) make it a no-no. night time shopping makes it easier. what u think?

I agree 100%
The lights, noise, movement, colours etc all make me feel very anxious and disoriented. Last week, when my husband and I went to Costco, it was so busy, I was actually feeling like I was going to faint and I had to get out of there.

They don't confuse me but they really stress me out. I do best when I go with a friend, which is at least enough distraction so I can get through it.

Yes, I agree. I find grocery stores and Wal-Mart type stores to be confusing. I have literally paced up and down aisles over and over again just trying to find an item. I have often asked clerks for help. The noise and everything else going on (and Wal-Mart's lighting) can cause me a lot of anxiety and stress.

The people do. I like the store otherwise. I wish I could take all the people out of one, and spend time there. I like to read labels and price tags, and to see all the colours.

Can handle some stores until the stores begin to pump in background music which tends to yank my attention away from being in the store and noticeably slows down the process of decision making/product selection/product purchase.

Excellent point. The masses of people can get to me. I like to study items too, and I get tired of the pushy shove nature of a lot of the patrons.

I can tolerate them for short periods of time, however sometimes the music will force me to leave sooner than later.

They don't confuse me if I buy the same things in the same place.

The peeeeeeople make mega store shopping very confusing and frustrating expecially when packed full of them. The eye contact thing is the most difficult part, it seems like 50 or so people walking both ways with me having to decide how to micro-interact with each one. I dont wanna be rude and ignore everyone...but I dont wanna be a weirdo staring at folks either. In the south, ppl are expected to interact with strangers otherwise they are rude....or worse...a yankee. But trying to adhere to these social rules in a busy store is confusing and makes me lightheaded. Mom says my facial expression is blank and frozen in a crowded situation.

I used to cashier in a supermarket. I still shop in the same chain so the layouts are very similar. My technique is to get in and out in ten minutes or less, i tend to shop early in the morning, right at opening, so crowds arent an issue. the muzak doesnt bother me.

I only shop in the last hour a particular supermarket's open, 9:15-10pm for Asda or Tesco - there are so many fewer people there, it's a lot easier. An added bonus is that the checkout staff are nearly at the end of their shift so they just wanna ring my stuff through as quickly as possible and get it out of the way - exactly the same as me ;) Also, by that time of day (and that length of shift) the small-talk is very predictable; 'I want to get out of here and sleep/go drinking/see my bf/see my gf/play xbox' and such so everything's a lot easier to handle :)

No, however there is one particular supermarket around here which has two different cheese and cold cut sections on opposite sides of the market from eachother and I've always found it rather annoying. I've heard many other shoppers mumble their annoyance at this as well.

I also don't understand why the saltine crackers aren't with the rest of the crackers but I'm sure they had their reasoning for it.

I find them confusing - especially when the store is always changing the layout where everything is.

Yup, this. People are so confusing in supermarkets. I'm always running into people because the aisles are always packed. If I see more than one person in an aisle I don't go through the aisle.
