The Combating Autism Bill

Squashed by Rep. Joe Barton of Texas

To me there can be no greater charge for an elected official then to protect and support for those members of our society who cannot speak for themselves. Currently one out of every 166 children in this country has autism and the numbers are increasing at an epidemic rate. Those family's that have an autistic child face financial ruin, emotional trama and heartbreaking pain. The senate passed the Combating Autism Bill with overwhelming support only to see it squashed by Rep. Joe Barton of Texas.

Rep. Barton is a disgrace to the office, a disgrace to the families suffering from autism and a disgrace to those who put him into office.

Rep. Barton has an agenda, clearly that agenda is politics and serving the interest of himself and big corporations. It is clear to me that the weakest and most helpless segment of our society, that is, our nations sick and helpless children is of no concern to him.

Shame on you Rep. Barton, and shame on those who will still support you after this behavior.

Have a look at Jack, he has Autism, He and those like him are the ones you hurt. I hope you are proud of what you did. Have a look at a sick child that needed your help and you turned your back on him and the million and a half others like him.

:(

 Cool, glad to get rid of that crappy piece of literature. Maybe while they're adjusting the language, they'll make it more palatable and humane. Starting with the name of the Act.
The Feds have already increased funding via the Defense Dept (going to war on Autistics, are they?)
A lot of questionable (quackery) aspects to the Combating Autism Act. It needs to be cleaned up or dropped.

Marking by far the coolest Texas politician since LBJ.

Bit of an iffy title.

The wording needs to be changed.

Wait, now I looked this guy up on Wiki and figured out that he's a jackass in the pocket of big oil. I'm so very, very confused now.

The names of bills can be deceptive or vague. So I don't know whether this bill's being squashed is good or bad. Could someone provide a link to a summary or the actual text of the bill?

Agreed.. the naming of a bill is always more of an advertising campaign than an accurate description of its contents. I guess politicians think people are stupid enough to vote for a bill based solely on its rainbows and fluffy bunny name rather than its actual contents (unfortunately though considering the nature of sheeple they may be right).

Here. here! Combating Autism Act was nothing more than a 1 BILLION dollar money grab for researchers - many of whom wanted money to be ciphered into all kinds of directions. And the real joke of the bill was that it required MANDATORY screening of ALL children by age 2 - which besides the obvious of missing many kids who regress - would provide the "fodder" for the researchers. One thing that is dramatically noticeable in the bill is that amount of money NOT going to people who have autism. So when I heard this I thought great because it seemed like this bill was unstoppable.

Here is a link to a text versioin of the bill. I agree this was a good thing that it was stopped. The money that would have been used by this bill could be much better spent on actually helping people with autism and autism research.
Certainly this bill has some good qualities, but in my opinion the bad outweighs the good.

Much of the money in this bill would have been funneled into "genetic research".

Genetic research is generally a code term for "prevent them from happening".

I for one don't want to see mother's start aborting fetus' due to the chance they may be autistic.

The first post, whom does Dano4734 quote?

It doesn't appear he's quoting anyone, or else I'm pretty sure there'd not be typos/misspellings.

His post read like a quote, but on closer look, yeah, it's probably his personal view. I couldn't find verification in the news headlines (Yahoo!news or Wikipedia). The only thing I found was at the "combating Autism.org" site itself. I still can't tell if the Act is dead or just shelved-the language seemed ambiguous.
Finding any news on the Act has been hard for me. I keep getting "updates" in my email about it from a listserv I'm on. The assumption is that of course, I'd want to purge the world of Autism.
But the updates aren't actually informing of the bill itself, just who is on the bandwagon. I don't know why the Media is ignoring this kind of information.

The grand plan, from the government down to the "curebies", is to rid the world of autism altogether.

This will free up "valuable resources" so their average Johnny can get recess again instead of running around the playground after school.
