I think animals have huge therapeutic value.
I personally relate better with cats, since I had a lot when growing up.
Sadly, I don't have any pets now.

Depends on the species. Dogs see like little NT's to me and are too "in your face". Cats are just like them. My bearded dragon is a regestered service animal because she helps me so much. She's helped me become more social, not that I've ever cared about being social but some people do. It's not everyday people see a lizard on someone's shoulder or being held like a baby so they naturaly have to ask about her. One lady at Subway is a b***h but since Pippin is a service animal there is nothing she can do about it. She says she freaks out the customers but I've never seen anyone truly freaked out by her and it's not like I'm going to let her run around on the floor or on food. The people at the local service station and petsmart get upset if I DON'T have Pippin with me.

Dogs do seem more playful but they can settle down and sleep in your lap. Just stroking my dog's head was comforting when I was upset. She also offered some avoidance to my low moods when we'd run around the yard and play with a ball. I don't have her anymore so all I have is two cats to cuddle. So it's dogs and cats for me. They're soft and affectionate.

Saw this book at Barnes and Noble the other day:

I think I could write a book titled "All Horses Have Autism".
The similarities are abundant.

If someone asked me if I thought pets were therapeutic in my life, I'd respond by saying, "It's as therapeutic as food." You can fast without food for quite a while, but sooner or later you're going to need to eat in order to keep on living. That's how I'd describe what my pets mean to me.

Yes I think they are.
Dogs are my obsession and I can't live without a dog.
My dog Lindo helps me so much. When I'm freaking out about something, he only needs to push his nose against my leg and I calm down.
He also helps me socialize, because when I can talk about him, I feel safer and more confident.
And I don't have a problem with touching him and be touched, dogs can lay on my legs or feet or even lick my face and its not a problem for me. And he is the only living beeing I can have around me 24/7.
I like cats too, but I can't have the same feelings as I have for dogs ( my dog is like a best friend to me)

Yes, they definitely are. Some species work better for certain people or problems, but I think that there is a species for everyone.

My favourite are dogs (who would have guessed that?), but I get along fine with cats and horses as well and I can sit and watch birds, fish or reptiles for hours. Drop me at the zoo and I'll only notice it's not summer anymore when it starts to snow.

It's not just AS or general depressions that animals can help with. My grandmother suffers from dementia and on her worse days she hardly reacts to people anymore. But she will always react to dogs, be it our own or someone else's. I have even seen demented people that spend the days just staring ahead and sleeping activley stroke a dog and SMILE. And that is definitely a reason why they should have animals in seniors' residences and similar institutions, I think. They ask for nothing but a little food, a place to sleep and some love and they give back so unbelievable much.

They are for some folks.

it is nice to care about something beside one's self.
