What exactly does this have to do with executive functiong anyway?

Doesn't it have more to do with processing speed?

I've read that executive functioning depends on processing speed but processing speed doesn't depend on executive functioning.

Anyway....does any one know how NT's usually perform on this?

This NT got 4.

I'll take a wild guess and say that a goodly majority of people, neurotypical or not, think of seven or less in a minute.

It took me about 30 seconds to get to 15, so I stopped. I might try this one on my kids tomorrow and see how they do.

that was a quick minute.

i got 6: snail, snake, sloth, slippery eel, salamander .. maybe i only had 5.

i'm a visual thinker and i tried this two ways:

s + (vowel)
s + (t, tr, p)
sh ..

but while i was doing that hippos and rhinos kept popping up, then i had to figure out what they were called (why do they remind me of S? elephants too)

two thought processes going on at once, neither very expeditious, also i was trying to categorize the animals in my head before settling on them .. are they "animals" or not? don't ask me how this came about. but i found it an interesting exercise as far as recognizing how many steps are necessary for me to come up with an appropriate word for something.

very unhappy with forgetting "squid"

I do the same

I don't have problems with this type of games. When I was child, my family used to play games with words like
- country, city, river, animal, plant, name, job etc. beginning with letter ...
- one loooong word, use letters to make new words
- make one word of few
- word is abbreviaton of .... - f.e. VALOY means Violent Adults Like Oppressing Youngers
- make a rhyme with words ....
- and ofc Scrabble

I found 10 animals while my roommate was listening to Backstreet Boys  I think it's good.

Yikes.

I could only think of one animal: snake. Several other S words that were not animals were stuck in my mind, like scott, stuck and slippery elm. Lordy.

What does it mean if you don't properly try the task, since you know you can't properly try it, being as there's no way to stop thinking of animals that begin with S so you can set the timer first, especially since you already thought of one immediately upon reading the question?

I got one if you count simian. I doubt that counts, though.

Why? Lots of autistic people have problems with executive functioning.

According to something quoted earlier in the thread, it's because it not only tests ability to come up with information, but the ability to organize it in a particular way.

So what's the average score for someone without executive dysfunction, and what's the average score for someone with it? *should probably have read the thread*

I basically just went "s... s..." and let my mind form words, then disregarded them if they were nonliving. Note that I thought of "scorpion" JUST as time ran out, and didn't count "crumple-horned snorkak" because technically it starts with C.

But I got snake, snail, slug, sheep, spider, scorpion and silverfish.

I would've done better, but I kept spacing out...

I forgot what the others were. When I tried to remember I came up stoat .... weasel .... no go back ... sq sq sss sand ... sss .....

I'm very good at forgetting things.

Oh one of them was slug.

I think I have a problem with the beginning sounds of words when doing this test.

Dammit... Only came up with snake, seal and sea lion... considered zebra, but obviously couldn't include it.... :)

I might be excused though, considering english isn't my first language, but I doubt I could come up with any more in norwegian either. Something about being put on the spot and asked to perform in a set time frame....... :)

Sasquatch (First thing that popped into my mind... ._.)
Snake
Snail
Salmon
Sardine
Shark

I used the stop watch on my cell phone to do this and as soon as the clock stopped I started thinking faster "salamnder, sloth, seagull, saint bernard, scottish terrier, snapping turtle, star fish, scarab, scorpion, serpent, spider, skunk..." What the heck does that mean for me?
