I just finished reading "When I was Five I killed Myself" also released in US as "Burt"...The author works at the Adam Shelton Center for autistic young adults.I am not positive if the mane character(an 8 year old boy)has aspergers. He certainly has a lot of traits,as does his "girlfriend" and one of the guys who works at the "clinic" he gets sent to.He is a literalist, spelling champ, verbaly advanced, obsessed with a girl in his class, has tactile sensitivities, melt downs, lack of respect for authorities but also a desire to "follow the rules,be a good citizen, not swear",.....on the other hand, the only obsession they describe is the little girl(but it is intense),he is described as having good hand writing and a good imagination(he has a lot of "fantasies" involving being a super hero.If he is ASpie,it's interesting that they didnt make him a "sterotype" but that also makes it harder to tell the intentions of the author.Considering he works in a clinic with Autistics,I think it is probably based on some of his own experiences?
Interesting, that the book is very popular in France(where he lives) but never made a hit in USA.I would love to see it made into a movie, think it has a positive slant on autism.
You know, I'm not sure if I'm right on this. Maybe Burt from Burt & Ernie was named, after the Burt from the story. Since, Burt does have Aspie characteristics. Such as collecting bottlecaps & paperclips, being very interested in pigeons.
