That's called a lemniscate. But how does that represent autism?

I'd think maybe, a symbol with a small object orbiting a larger mass, representing our general outsiderness.

I bet most of you know where I stole this symbol from :-)

No, but it looks like a diagram of a hydrogen atom.

When I see the puzzle piece I think that it says that every person with autism is different. One person may have severe sensory issues, one may not have any, and others are somewhere in between. There is no standard "autistic" person and you cannot generalize, therefore you put the pieces together to fit that person specifically.

I could be wrong, but that's how I see it.

Yes, it is a symbol of a hydrogen atom, but I modified it to make the proton larger.

There's also a pop culture reference embedded with it, particularly with the blue background.

I feel a strong affinity with your suggestion. I was very moved when I heard a performance of 1 Corinthians 13 by a Greek singer called Petros Tabouris, in which he rendered verse 3 as "if I do not have love, I am a nothing" (αν δεν εχω αγαπη, ειμαι ενα τιποτα) instead of the usual "if I do not have love, I am nothing".

The difference between being "a nothing" (like your insignificant particle) and part of the great "nothing" is so profound, and so isolating.

Thank you! But I went away and thought about it, and I don't know if something to symbolize 'us' should focus on a negative, although I suppose that some (or many?) of us have made our outsiderness a part of our being, and maybe even enjoy or utilise some of the positive strengths that being an outsider can bring.

I think I got it now. The Watchmen graphic novel has been sitting on my shelf for a while now, but for some reason I can't bring myself to start reading it.

A sign called the eye of the medicine man, synonymous with wisdom and awareness for some native American tribes in the south western USA.

This is the ladder of transmigration, the soul's pilgrimage from the earthly existence to paradise. During the sixteenth century 0309 was used to signify levels of increased awareness, and is therefore also a synonym to the alchemical symbol, the golden chain of Homer. Refer to the section "Esoteric alchemy" in the Appendices.Image

When I listen to Bodysnatchers by Radiohead I see this image vividly, only it's in constant motion with the colours of the rainbow chasing each other. It's as if a pair of cogs are driving a rainbow-coloured belt around a path describing the infinity symbol.

I strongly dislike the puzzle piece, because of it's implications for us as something to be 'solved' in society. It's very much representative of the nuerotypical majority's perceptions of us, rather than our own lived experiences.

I like the mobius strip, though I'm not sure why. I also like the medicine man symbol, though I'm dubious about appropriating others' cultural heritage for our own ends.

I so dislike the puzzle pieces. It reminds me too strongly of Autism Speaks and all of the orgs that run a pity machine for us. A symbol needs to represent pride.

I like the infinity sign. It seems popular. Can we just have a vote?

I'd like to see us have a symbol, but all I see in discussion of a symbol is disagreement and quibbling. Let's just decide for ourselves, here and now.

I like the puzzle piece. I have a t-shirt and also some socks with the puzzle pieces on! I dislike the ribbon because I think the ribbon has homosexual tones generally.

I have an alternative for the puzzle piece.

I reckon the symbol should be a good old fashioned "?"

But .. but .. but it's pretty and shiny! That's why I like it so much. The metallic multi-colour style one anyway. Although I have to admit, I do worry that people will see the colours and assume it means I am something I'm not, lol.

Homosexual tones? What ribbon is that? The gays have a rainbow flag, not a ribbon. Some have a triangle. Not a ribbon. Ribbons are for breast cancer, our soldiers, AIDS awareness, DARE/drug-free week for children, domestic abuse, and a few dozen other (mostly medical) causes. But homosexual? Not in the least.
