[put in here because im wondering if its aspie related?]

Well this has gotten a little better as I've gotten older, but it was kinda funny... almost every time I was in any kind of retail store, regardless of how i was dressed, people would come up to me and ask me where to find things. Seriously this happened once at a Family Dollar while wearing my 'winter filth sweater' with thumb holes and giant baggy pants with neon green trim. Best thing I could figure is that i'm always looking around studying my environment, which could be mistaken for an employee checking on things. Funny part, is i could usually tell them exactly where their item in question was :D

does this ever happen to anyone else?

It's happened a few times. I have done it too to others. That's why it's so nice when some stores have their employers wear the uniform tops. It doesn't help if all they wear is name tags because then I have to stare at them to see if they work there when I see them putting things back (I can't always see their name tag). Sometimes I ask if they work there when I need anything.

Yes. Yes. Yes.
I hate seeing things dumped in the wrong place in the supermarket or the wrong shelf price tag in position, only last week a woman asked me "What time do you close tonight" when I was puting something back in the correct place.

I actually have the opposite problem. Because of how I look and generally act, when I am at work people don't actually believe I work there. I have uncanny knowelge of where I work so when people talk to me they know bit they will generally approach other employees given the choice over me.

I'm more likely to be accused or thought of as shoplifting.

I get this a lot too almost to the point of harassment. Apparently not smiling and not making Eye contact with employees automatically makes you a thief.

hahaha, Yes.
funny you should mention it. I guess it does sorta have to do with how we scan/process the environment. or take our time, or something :)

Generally, this does not happen to me. It has happened to me only once that I can remember.

My problem with stores is that I can't stop employees when I need help. I almost have to get right in their faces and yell before they notice me. I remember one time when I finally managed to stop someone after he passed me three or four times, he was really annoyed with me. He said that he looked right at me, and I didn't ask for help. The thing was, I waved at him each time he passed.

Of course, if I don't need assistance, I can't keep them from swarming around me.

It's only happened to me once - it was one of those moments that made me feel 'icky' so it sticks in my memory - I was 13, with my mother, aunt and cousins at a garden centre, I was wearing a smart-ish blue shirt with a navy emblem, so I could see why they mistook me for someone working there in the koi fish section...but at that age I was still unable to talk to people so I made a strange noise at them (leaving them looking very confused) and ran off to have a bit of a shut-down.

I'm surprised it doesn't happen to me now, I'm TERRIBLE for rearranging things on shelves...it'd be so satisfying working in a gift card store, but alas it's not really like I can tell them exactly why I'd be so amazingly great working for them, lol. I get less customers thinking I'm staff, and more staff members wondering what the hell I'm doing :D

If you stand for long periods of time with your head swiveling around as if looking for someone to help... then you're behaving exactly like a retail store employee :P

One time this happened to me while I was in a Target store. The funny thing was, I was wearing a McDonald's uniform. 8O

It has happened to me quite a bit and I'm not sure I understand it and even though I tell them I don't work there I end up trying to help as we usually can't find an actual employee. When my kids are with me and it happens they think it's just too funny. 8O
