Yep. Especially for telephone conversations.

I rehearse quite a lot mentally, in fact I try to even prepare for things years ahead of my time. I use my daydreaming imagination to simulate scenarios frequently and that can scope from hours to years ahead of time, and then I basically save them for future use. I also keep essential objectives in mind for what I'm suppose to do, so even if the scenario pans out to be completely wrong, I can still resume my business without major flaws. I also occasionally imagine re-living situations to see if there was a better way to handle those events back then, although I find it irritating to think about my past.

I also do that - however sometimes I get so focused on practicing or anticpating I end up looking like I am talking to myself :) So I have to remember to keep that in check.

With therapists though I found that when going to see the psychologist/therapist generally the conversations there were more open ended and I could limit the going over and over. Seeing the psychiatrist however was much different because you knew everything you said would be scrutenized and saying the wrong thing was not a good idea. So I would get really stressed about that and practive and go over what I would say or may have to answer tons of times.

Also if I have to make a phone call, I write myself out a script beforehand, or I just get confused and can't remember what I needed to say or the words come out wrong.

*repeats mentally for the 50th time*
Well whaddaya know, other people do that too..

It's true, and it's too bad that all this rehearsing / rehashing never does a lick of good once you're actually speaking to the person in question... like there's always a factor that you've omitted.

Yes, I do it too ... I hate it (sometimes)

It's stressful to do, but you can't stop doing it (well, i can't anyway)

I'm sure it just leaves me more confused afterwards, anyway.

Just seems to create more and more questions for me.

:?

I also have the telephone thing sometimes, too.
I'll make a little script (takes the form of some short notes, or some sentences that I'd like to get accross in the conversation), I only sometimes though, not very often.

I rehearse all the time too.

I have had to do it to survive in my job. I'm supposed to give "fluid/dynamic" briefs as well as make small talk and socialise at "cocktail parties" on ship. Both of which i am totally out of my depth with.

I rehearse all briefs so I am just "making the noise" or learn verbatim. Same socially I have a set routine in my head of standard phrases to say when i meet people and i just run through it like a check off list in my head.

Its very tiring and after a day at work the last thing i need is to have to rehearse some small talk for a cocktail party or go to the pub and do the same thing.

Holy crap. yes that is so me!! !

I don't do it as often, or as badly as I used to... but oh, did I take it to extremes!! !

Is that something NTs do too? I've always wondered.

Or is it a case where they do it too, but we take it to extremes? :?

I do it before I call someone. I even do it when I call my parents.

Have any of you studied the Enneagram? The Enneagram is used as an indicator of personality type and illustrates nine distinct personalities, showing how these types react when under stress and when flourishing.

In at least one of the Enneagram books, type number five, the Observer, Thinker, Investigator, rehearsing is listed as a trait of that type. Also reviewing afterwards. And if this is enlightening, delayed feeling of emotion... having to take time afterwards to process an event before feeling the attendant emotions. I'd guess that would be 1) Rehearsal. 2) Event. 3) Analysis and review. 4. Reaction.

Oh geez. I used to do that all the time, for years, when I was learning how to interact with people. It didn't come naturally, and I'm supposed to be NT. Maybe. :?

I don't think so ... maybe they do it to a certain extent, but I'm fairly sure it's a lot less.

My NT friends always used to say to me:
'... why do you think so much' or one which I found quite annoying '... you think too much'

Yes my husband and I (both autistic) have been told endlessly by his parents that we 'think too much'. Which makes me angry. I mean that's how we are, end of.

I talked to husband about rehearsing and he reckons everyone does it (including NTs) but I mean how would he know when he's not NT himself? I think one of the mistakes we make, in fact, is that everyone thinks the same as we do.

I do it a lot. Sometimes I will try to think of what to say and then just decide not to say it. The time I spend "trying to get it right" depends on both on how long I've been around the person/people I may speak to, and how comfortable I am. Just because I know someone for a long time doesn't mean I may not hesitate before speaking. They could even be a close family member.

Strike another mark for "all the time"! :D Relive, rehearse, reevaluate.

I pre-write my e-mails. I hate leaving phone messages because I can't go back and fix it if I mess up so I usualy write what i'm going to say and read off that if I realy need to leave a message. If not then I just don't bother alltogether.

I even try to imagine what I have to do for college life but I don't know what the campass looks like or the people there so it's really hard to do that.

I'm writing a letter at the moment. I'm determined to do it in actual handwriting, even though my handwriting is terrible, because I feel that a typed letter is a bit formal sometimes, and I want to be friendly. I haven't actually written anything yet, and plan to write 1 or two sentences on paper, cut them out when they are perfect, and stick them on to the final thing. I know this would seem crazy to a lot of people but it's how I'm doing it!
