Do you guys listen to music mostly for the lyrics or the music its self?

I sometimes like the lyrics to a song, but most of the time I am just listening to the music. I like really upbeat sounding music. I think that is why I really don't know the words or the names of a lot of songs, except ones I do like the lyrics to.

I listen to some songs for the lyrics, but primarily for the music. For whatever reason, I am attracted to certain basslines and certain unsual guitar effects. I also like a lot of synth sounds. If I listen to Lady Gaga, it is not for the lyrics. It is because I am intrigued by the synth in the background.

That is me exactly. I think that's why I like to listen to 3OH3!

I listen to a lot of classic rock for all the awesome guitar riffs.

I rarely listen to music with lyrics.
For me it's all about the structure, harmonies and progression.

^^ it is the only reason I listen to 3OH3! as well. I want to buy a Moog.

And the classic rock solos too. I like a Hendrix solo with a lot of wah for example.

Synths are great fun! :bounce:
I should have maybe added that almost everything I listen to is classical, and very little of that isn't later than Mozart. Or more accurately, most of it is Bach and Bach's contemporaries.

I actually like a lot of classical. For some odd reason I really like the American composer Gershwin (even though he is fairly recent and not in the same ballpark as a Mozart or a Bach). I also enjoy classic jazz such as Charlie Parker.

I have to enjoy both, though the music itself is usually more important then the lyrics.

I listen to music almost solely for the lyrics. :) It seems that only listening to the music is the norm though. You should make a poll. ;)

Yeah, Gershwin's Ok but obviously ultra modern to me.
I can't imagine there's anyone alive who hasn't heard at least part of "Rhapsody in Blue", and "Porgy and Bess" is well worth a listen too. It uses many out-and-out 'hardcore' classical structures.

I think I am drawn to Gershwin just because he incorporates a jazz feel. I tinker with a saxophone so I am biased.

i've always had trouble misconstruing lyrics as sung in the modern incoherent manner in today's pop music. this frustrates me because i want to know what they are all singing about. that is why i am much more comfortable with instrumental-only music.

I mostly listen for the music, if I'm busy doing something I prefer music without words, the lyrics tend to distract me. but, if I'm not doing anything, then I don't really have a preference.

I listen to a lot of trance and down-tempo dance music, I find the repetitive and rhythmic nature of it very relaxing.

For me personally, the way a song sounds takes precedence over the lyrics. If the lyrics are also good, I consider that a bonus. This has caused the vast majority of songs on my iPod to have a good melody, but lyrics which are very silly and/or offensive.

When it's a song I've never heard I don't really pay attention to the lyrics. If I like the song I listen to the lyrics
