Supposedly my doctor thought I'd managed to wrap myself in my umbilical cord & unwrap myself again right before birth. (I was doing gymnastics in utero 8)) So that's why I was blue...

Can we have a colored baby club? I think my skin has at least been a mild shade of ebery color under the rainbow at some point :D. But the color I usually turn now is healthy/pink-white.

I was also a blue baby. I was born with my umbilical cord wrapped around my neck.

Interesting stories. My mom was told I wouldn't walk/talk/live to be a year old so she could take me home. I'm also in college and will be 25 as of March 29th WOO! HOO!! !! :-) So much for dying although sadly at times threats to be killed by mom and yelling as such mention in past posts I've made makes me at times wish perhaps I hadn't been born as depressing as that sounds. :-(

I was a bit blue. But two of my children are on the spectrum too, one was distressed and an emergency caesar, the other was
born very normally with no sign of distress and he struggles more in life than the distressed one.

I was wondering if we could have a gene that predisposes us to be AS if there is any stress at birth, ie a weakness. Then it would be both genetic and environmental. It would mean we were developing normally for the first 9 months which would explain why
we are as able as we are.

I don't know what color I was when I was born, but the umbilical cord was wrapped around my neck, too. I was second to come after my sister, which also might have contributed to lack of oxygen.

Needing air topic

My son was O2 deprived, and was slightly bluish, as he was 33 weeks gestation. He is perfectly healthy, strong, bright--and NT. :P

I was told I 'forgot to breathe' after I was born, and I was moved into intensive care and put on a ventilator for a while. I don't know if this contributes to any form of autism, and I don't think anyone does know, but it's interesting to say the least.

There wasn't any physical reason why I didn't breathe (I wasn't tangled up in my umbilical cord or in any dangerous position). I just seemed to forget or not realize that I had to breathe when I was born. Never been given a reason.

I had a normal birth

It should be considered if autistic traits can cause a different birth or different reactions from the baby as it's removed from the womb and even different behaviour in the womb rather than a different birth being the cause autism as this would better explain why some had normal births but some didn't.

Thank you for all your answers - I'm quite surprised that many do seem to have been oxygen deprived for at least a little while at birth. But can it be a contributing factor when it only appears to apply to some - not all?

Oh and keep the answers coming - I think the results are quite interesting - even if they are inconclusive

It could count as a possible environmental trigger that only effects certain people depending on their genetic make-up/predisposition.

I was born with the umbilical cord around my neck and kept under observation for a while because I was premature; that's as far as I recall how the story goes, apart from the fact that my poor Mum gave birth to me in the corridor of the hospital apparently and my Dad had to "catch me", because it was so poorly staffed at the time; probably quite a distressing experience!

There is an audio tape somewhere of my sister singing to "the new baby" on the day I arrived home; I'm sure that made all the stress worth it!

Ive read premature births can have something to do with it too.
I was a month premature myself.

When I was born my umbilical cord (nuchal) was wrapped around my neck 3 times, subsequently leading to generalized hypoxia (deprivation of oxygen). I remained in hospital for about 10 days under observed care, was deep purple for about a month, and I never cried until I was around 2 or 3. There is overwhelming consensus that such birth complications are linked to neurological developmental disabilities, although it has been argued by some empiricists that they may "switch on" genes in any infant born with inherent predispositions (genetic susceptibility) to ASD's; afterwards, the child may develop normally for several months and then gradually regress into autism.

Born blue/purple, with a collapsed lung. It took 3 days in an incubator for me to gain normal color. Then, once I got home, I was found to have acid reflux/a sensitive gag reflex and I couldn't keep food down. Back to the hospital for another two weeks. I started showing symptoms of ASD at 16-17 mo, but it was the mid 70s and the refrigerator mother theory was in vogue, so no doctor could figure out that I had ASD. My mom finally got me into speech therapy, which is why I can talk.
