Because it disgusts me. I'm literally disgusted by self diagnosed aspies. And if you were legitimately diagnosed it should disgust you too. Those who incorrectly self diagnose only hurt those who truly have the disorder. Those that incorrectly self diagnose help to create a false image of people that suffer from aspergers. It is very possible that people are not accepting of those with aspergers because so many creeps have decided to diagnose themselves with AS to have an excuse for their poor behavior. And this is what the layperson often sees.

Really. You sound way too invested in this.

Also, I am only a few weeks away from my official diagnosis. My family, PCP, and therapist all agree I have it. It's just a matter of seeing a psych, not that I should have to justify whether I am autistic enough, so whatever.

So you are the kind of person I'm talking about. Not officially diagnosed but dead set on having the diagnosis. You are only a few weeks out. You say that as if you were going on vacation or receiving a promotion. Why do so many of you desire or need to have this disorder?

Never said I was disgusted by those that don't meet my standards. I said I was disgusted by those who self diagnose.

What does that have to do with anything? Of course you can be self diagnosed and write books or be an advocate for it. Doesn't mean you have it.

I thought "aspies" were logical thinkers? You seem a little off in that department.

I am wrong to point out your flawed logic? Anyone can study, write and give speeches about paranoid schizophrenia. Doesn't mean they are paranoid schizophrenic.

Already called it. Mods disagree.

Which, of course, also nullifies my statement that I wasn't going to feed it anymore.

Have fun. I'm over it. I think I'm going to go out and do some gardening.

I went to therapy because of depression and anxiety. I mentioned briefly that I thought I had Asperger's Syndrome to my therapist and she later said she saw clear signs of high-functioning autism during my third appointment. And she did not recognize my stimming as stimming, even though I do it fairly constantly.

Whether I want a diagnosis or not is irrelevant to the fact that I will probably get one because I actually am autistic. I do not desire or need to have this disorder, the fact is simply that I have it. You can complain all you want about your assumptions regarding my motivations, but you really can't know them.

It doesn't really matter. Your disdain doesn't really change anything for me. I'm still autistic and will still be so tomorrow.

And what if your diagnosis finds that you are not autistic? Will you call your doctor an idiot or inexperienced and just stick with your self diagnosis?

I do. My overall intuition is telling me he's not worth spending any time with/on whether or not he's a troll.

Have you been paying attention? It's not strictly a self-diagnosis at this point - family, friends, my therapist, and my PCP all agree with this with minimal (actually, practically non-existent) convincing. My therapist has written that she is certain I have Asperger's Syndrome on my diagnostic referral.

My diagnosis will not find that I am not autistic, because I am autistic. The psych may tell me that I am not autistic, but the psych would be mistaken. Of course, maybe there is some other reason I have difficulties with nuances in language, reading facial expressions and body language, why I flap my hands and pace and stare at patterns and lights, and why I am sensitive to sensory overstimulation, and hyposensitive to cold and pain, and why I have very little emotional affect, and why I tend to get so absorbed in my interests I have a difficult time doing much else, why I have trouble with transitions. Maybe there's a disorder that looks exactly like an ASD that isn't an ASD!

Are you for real?

First I'd like to admit upfront that I am what you would call a "normal" person.

After a friend told me he had aspergers I started researching it to find out what it was. Over the past few years of researching it I have to say I'm not sold on it. There may be legitimate cases of aspergers(Temple Grandin) but from everything I can find most who claim they suffer from aspergers are self diagnosed. As if that isn't bad enough I find this website and specifically this thread. I am shocked and disturbed by the lengths some will go to get officially diagnosed.

1) Most in this thread admit to being self diagnosed having never seen a professional. This is stupid for a number of reasons. If you believe you suffer from a mental disorder you can't possibly expect that you have the ability to see and evaluate things clearly.

2) Others have seen professionals but a diagnoses of aspergers was never given. The individual claims the doctor is wrong or an idiot and stands firm on their self diagnosis. You think you are more educated and experienced than the doctor because you read WebMD and Wikipedia.

3) Many admit to going to new doctors until they find one that will confirm their self diagnosis. You would think that one would be happy to find out that several doctors all agree you don't have a major mental disorder but for some reason they push on demanding that someone diagnose them. At this point the individual just wants an excuse for their behavior. You wouldn't see someone demand they be diagnosed and treated for cancer if a few doctors all said they didn't have it.

This is all very disturbing and if anything these individuals do suffer from a mental illness but it sure isn't aspergers. It is probably more like narcissism or egomania.

I think the real question is: Why do you think you are better qualified to diagnose your friend(and the others you have insulted on here) then he is?
