I understand how you feel. Not only the dull, endless feeling of ennui from non-challenging busywork, but frustration when I am interrupted. I can usually block other people out, but when somebody keeps breaking my focus on purpose it is bothersome considering that I am already trying to organize several trains of thought and have the work thought out in detail while they are interjecting with things that I am done with and far past, so then I have to respond to them while thinking of something on a completely separate level.

I'm not sure if it's even right to make broad generalizations about people with high-level degrees. I am not trying to be cruel at all; please don't misunderstand me. However, I've learned the hard way that just because people have a degree in their field and work in it doesn't mean they care about it. I've met several researchers in the process of studying in college who when you go up to them and show a lot of enthusiasm in their field, they just feel threatened by it and tell you to go away.

Ditto. Beats a McDonald's job any day. Even if the pay were as bad as a McDonald's job and I had to choose between that and a McDonald's job, it would definitely be the OP's job.

Wow, this is making me think my side-work on triphonic HMM modeling and tiedlist generation from arbitrary sampled utterances is a lot less weird than I thought.

Oh, that is boring. I'd still take that over a McDonald's job, which is about the only kind of jobs available in this economy.
