I don't know if I do that or not... *cough*look at my signature*cough* This is probably one of my biggest "Aspie things." I think it's some form of echolalia myself. When I recite quotes from my fav movies/TV shows, I not only mimic the inflection/accent that the actor used, but I also mimic the gestures and facial expressions. I just have an inherent knack for it. Sometimes, I'll be playing out a scenario with one of my own characters that I've created, acting as them, and I'll unconsciously use a gesture/facial expression from a movie. It isn't until I watch the movie that I recognize it. I do a lot from Down With Love that way, probably because the facial expressions just naturally go with my main character. I lapse into my quotes when I'm bored or by myself. I don't even realize I'm doing it half the time. I talk to myself all the time (which I read is an Aspie thing), and a third of this is reciting quotes. (The other two-thirds is me playing as my own characters or just simply talking to the air as myself.) I think it's a real talent. Us Aspies have lots of these "hidden talents."

I don't pick up characters' words as much as I do their mannerisms and attitudes. This usually lasts for a brief time after I watch a lot of one show (like getting House on DVD and watching most of it in one day). Of course I never pick up good characteristics.... :?

Oh, gods, yeah.

Some phrases are part of my stock vocabularly of phrases... I've been saying "Works for me" and "I love it when a plan comes together" since those shows were on the air. If someone says something exceedingly obvious, I'll often respond with "Clearly"-- not just the word, but imitating the voice and inflection of Christian Slater in FERNGULLY.

I'll even finish other people's accidental quotes. My wife used to say "Grr", which I would always answer with "Arrg." I'll also do it if she says "Brr." But I usually only do that when I know the other person will know what I'm quoting.

In 1972, a crack commando was sent to prison by a military court for a crime he didn't commit. This man promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Massachusetts underground. Today, still wanted by the government, he survives as a soldier of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if he gives a crap, maybe you can hire...

By chance are you hiring a Wurdock? My doc's say I'm getting out this week if I
agree to the estrogen injections.

Don't I know it. I guess that's why they're injecting you with estrogen.

I do that a lot, with the x-files and CI. But also tons of random things. Catchphrases, quotes. I also do the "be in character" thing. I get really into it and I'm gone...i'm that person...

ha ha...I do the "grr" "arg" thing too!

:D I'm new here and I'm already not feeling so alone!

Yeah, I do this all the time! I especially do it with Dakota Fanning's movies ("Uptown Girls", "War of the Worlds", "Cat in the Hat", "Hide and Seek", etc.). I guess I just find her characters really interesting or something because I can act exactly like them if I feel like it or even if it just fits into the moment or conversation.

All the time. If I'm in a similar situation as one on a TV show, I immediately think of that scene, and quotes from it come to mind.

I find myself picking up both quotes and movements/facial expressions from TV. Sometimes it's from so long ago that I've forgotten where it came from and have actually sometimes thought I've come up with it myself, then seen it done/said again by the original person, and thought, 8O

Yeah, at times, a certain situation will automatically trigger a quote from a movie or TV show and I'll usually say it if I find it appropriate. Also if I am bored and alone, I'll sometimes quietly "act" out a scene from something I remember in my mind from a show. Just the other day I was MSN'ing and felt used by the person and I instantly had to type "Ya used me, Skinner, ya used me!" - Groundskeeper Willie quote. :P Using lines can help me put some humor into a conversation.

I get alot of phrases and lines stuck in my head over the years. I used to memorize and recite 30 minute LP albums of children's stories, line for line as young as 3 years old.

Yes, I do it frequently. Some people consider it as something stupid, but other people see it as something interesting and funny.

Repeat lines that have stuck in my head from all sorts of places-if it says what I mean & I like how it sounds, then it stays in my repetoire. Use quotes that strike me as being humorous, bizarre, insightful, clever, revealing, and/or deeply serious. I send mail to a friend & include clippings from recent stuff I've read (or about movies I've seen), so that he'll know what I'm talking about when we're on the phone. I don't talk much to strangers, so I don't use lines w/them-wouldn't expect them to get the hidden meaning. My boyfriend gets the "in-joke" when I'm referring to something we've watched or heard together, and if it pre-dates our shared experiences I explain it to him.
South Park, British Comedies, Scrubs (what a surprisingly great show, IMHO), old SNL episodes, Book TV. Radio interviews (if they were interesting enough for me to take notes), books & articles, too. Last night on The Daily Show w/Jon Stewart, Jim Lehrer talked about "the courage to be boring". Been thinking over that phrase ever since...

Never anything from television but I have reinacted scenes from books before.

If youve never hid in a storm drain wearing a clown disguise and holding a balloon to see the kids reactions when you ask them if they want one as they pass by you have got to try it :P

Do you suppose that e-o-s-t-r-o-g-e-n is a good a-p-h-r-o-d-i-s-i-a-c?
