I was thinking of things to add to the "You might be an aspie..." thread (which so rocks) and realised that I didn't know for sure that some things are aspie traits.

For example:

-- my tendency to spell things in British style because it's more "authentic". Also, if I know how a word is pronounced in its mother tongue, I tend to do that. ("Moscow" is "Moskva" in Russian.)

-- my tendency to show affection by chewing on people.

Oh, thank you for mentioning the british (and correct) way of spelling, i'm very particular about it, it could be an obsessive thing, having to spell things the british way. Not sure what you meant by the Russian.

As for the chewing, hmmm, no idea, i suppose it is a way of showing affection, albeit an uncommon one, so, could be.

I was wondering about it because I'm reading Temple Grandin's Animals in Translation and she talks about how autistic emotion is similar to animal emotion.

I do the spelling of things the English way, but none of the other things you mentioned.

My spelling and grammar have gone into a downward spiral over the past serveral months, which is not surprising since I haven't been writing much at length or with a journalistic regard towards spelling and grammar.

I frequent several forums whose membership includes many from Commonwealth nations. Because of their influence, I sometimes misspell words the British way. What I do far more commonly than that is borrow their grammar. That's a habit I really want to get rid of when I'm writing fiction, unless the story necessitates using it. You probably can't be sure that these are Aspie traits until some scientific study proves it.

I don't do this, although most of the time I bite my fingernails instead of cutting them.

I sometimes use British spelling, particularly theatre and grey but it's not a compulsion for me. For me, biting is more of a sexual thing than an affectionate one.

I spelled a lot like Chaucer, until I got tired of my teachers carrying on about it. As for other stuff, I liked to sniff my mother's legs when I was a toddler, cause I loved the smell of her skin.

I love to bite, especially necks. My current boyfriend is to sensitive and it's one of the few things I miss.

spelling....I can barely spell in American,so it depends on what I have been reading, which has the greater influence.I do think the fact that I spent most of my time reading about conversations...that when I did try and talk to people I would often use words that I had recently been reading. If it happened to be Ye old English or a Russian author,I would get some strange reactions from people.

In my opinion, all emotion is like animal emotion. Because we are animals.

I get very pedantic about using English words but that is because I grew up in Australia and we don't speak US English there. Or here, which is New Zealand. But I get especially fussy about -- for example -- when others talk about "people and animals" like they are so separate.

A basic syllogism. We are alive. We are multi-cellular organisms. We are not plants. Therefore we are animals.

Also when people talk about apes but they don't include humans in that group, because humans are apes. (This could turn into a rave. But I'll stop now.)

I always write "theatre," but this is because the one I usually went to growing up spells it that way on the building. I occasionally spell other things like... I work for a counseling agency, and am constantly accidently typing "behaviour" when writing up notes on my kiddos.

As for the biting, one of the aspie quizzes asks if you "lick people you like." I guess I do tend to bite my BF sometimes. Maybe we just don't know what else to do sometimes?

I'm exactly the opposite for some reason - I'm British and I tend to use more American spellings. :?

Well, I wouldn't think canniablism would be an AS trait either... but of course I am not attempting to eat the people, just to express emotion by.... well, hugging them with my teeth.
