Near the end of the World War II, Hans Asperger opened a school for children with autistic psychopathy, with Sister Victorine. Sadly the school was bombed towards the end of the war, Sister Victorine was killed, the school was destroyed and much of Hans Asperger's early work was lost. It was this event that arguably delayed the understanding of autism spectrum conditions in the west.

When I saw this: it brought shivers down my spine

Actually, Has Asperger lived until the late 1970s. Unfortunately, most of his work was ignored until Lorna Wing, in the search for answers in her own research projects, stumbled upon his paper in the early 1980s (in other words, he did not live to get the recognition he deserved but then neither did alot of people).

You're right, I forgot about that. 8-( It IS amazing that something done so long ago and so far away can affect so many even today.

Yes, his papers were never translated into English or other Euro languages until the 80s with Wing and Frith.

Plus after WWII, the rest of the world didn't exactly have a stellar relationship with Germany for a long time, so I doubt information got easily shared.
