In other words...

And how does it happen - viscerally? Is it analogous to someone who gets uncomfortable when you infringe on their personal space by getting close to them so quickly? Maybe it is, but I can't imagine that it could cause someone to intensely hate me (but yet, that DOES happen)

People were so nice when they were freshmen. Maybe because they have less "personal space" when they were freshmen (or in other words, they were more willing to let others approach them before they could get irritated).

It's really weird because I'm very insecure, so I never get pissed off by inappropriate friend requests (that being said, I will reject people if they appear to be "friend *****s" with 3000 friends for no good reason)

This reaction makes no sense to me. Unless the person you send a request to hates your guts and wants to be nowhere near you, and possibly even expects you to be aware of this, I don't get how an e-mail notification that one can ignore, reject, or accept could be invading anyone's space.

Direct and straight-to-the-point, just the way I like it.

Another possibility is that they get flooded with random friend requests and they get angry about it and they're taking their anger out on you (And anyone else who "randomly" sends friend requests. I.e., they don't know you or don't know you that well.)
