Do you analyse things you see around you all / most of the time? Like analyse the texture and look for patterns / symmetry and counting things- in the tiniest things like: carpet, plug sockets, wooden surfaces, specs of dust, shiny things, things that aren't perfect, oddly placed, damaged or scratched, the holes in a speaker - stuff like that- I can stare at it for ages and sometimes feel a tiny bit anxious.
Basically the tiniest detailings on anything and everything especially in new places and situations. Sometimes even happens when I'm talking to someone I get easily distracted by these things.
- similar to this I remember a few times I have not been able to stop reading a sign over and over again!
I think it's reduced/non-existent if I'm doing or thinking about a 'special interest'.

Is this an aspie thing? Or just me being weird? I've always done this since I was a little person.

Yup, mostly oddities. Like someone with a gold tooth while nobody else has one.

Indeed. I think about the construction of such things or what they remind me of. I like it when ceilings have a bit of a decoration. My own bedroom had lots of sharps edges and lines on the ceiling. Usually when on the train and waiting for it to move my eyes will just focus on the tracks, the rocks, discarded rubbish, and fallen objects like a child's toy.

I also love small textured objects and to pick them up and run my fingers along its dents and indents, feel the cold hard metal and allow it to show me an image or colour in my mind.

And you thought you were weird.

Yep same kinda stuff too. It's handy though waiting for the train/bus I've been with NT people and they get really bored quick and moan about it. I once was fixated with details, waiting for a job interview with some other people and not realised I'd been waiting 1hr 30min till I complained xD

I forgot to mention this when I was diagnosed.

Constantly. I over-analyze everything, often to the point of obsession. :/

Yep. I'll wake up from a little trance and realize I've been flipping a book over through my hands, studying the texture of the dust jacket, covers, pages, and binding. This is only one example of many. The insult "navel gazer" hits home for me, but I do not, fortunately, gaze at my navel.

I do this constantly, and am always noticing things other people pay absolutely no attention to.

Yes, but so, then why doesn't everybody else? It never ceases to dismay me that even simple concepts, like hydrostatic pressure, are lost on most anyone you talk to. There's nothing special about being able to analyze things. It's just that some of us make use of our ability to do so and some of us don't. Too bad.

If I didn't analyze everything, what would I do all day?

It's an aspie thing, and it's one of the things I love to do. Attention to detail is a positive attribute, and it's why aspies are good at certain occupations.

I'm like that to, even when sitting in a train, bus or car (provided I'm not the driver) I look out the window trying to register everything that passes/ I pass bye (relativity). I also usually see patterns in seemingly random arrangements and get a tad annoyed when things are placed crooked. When really contemplating something I can easily faze out for a bit.

Who doesn't?

wewll, to say sooth, I have bdeen pattern-seeking long enough - since playing with marbles was sorting them by size, type, color, etc - that I have noticed a lot of people do not.

But it is easier to imagine not breathing than not analyzing.

The mind is a constant blur of thoughts examining, conceptualizing, investigating, processing. I'd like to control this a bit better, because at times it can be overwhelming and prevent me from functioning "in the real world".

Oh Yes! Although I have OCD so I just always thought it was that. I am starting to wonder whether there is some kind of crossover.
