It annoys me greatly when people say "hack" when they mean absolutely nothing of the sort.

for the benefit of the rest of us grammatical amateurs ["hacks"?], how would you have people use "hack" in a sentence or phrase?

Well, by "hack" I meant in the computer sense, as in hacking into a computer. For example, using an SQL database you have access to to change or reset someone's password is not hacking, nor is posting a status update on someone Facebook account because they forgot to logout hacking. :P

Other fingernails on the chalkboard scenarios would be:

what is it about this emblem that offends you?

Simple aesthetics, just don't like the way the emblem looks.
Also typically found on ugly cars, again subjective.
If you drive a Toyota, I hope I have not offended you.

For some reason I hate the emblem too

@pree10shun: Wow. . . I'm speechless. . . you must be my long lost twin, lol.

Alarm clocks on TV...

...there should be a law preventing this, seriously, it's a horrible sound and bad enough you have to hear it every morning without having to hear it on TV too. The sound is offensive and all-round unpleasant.

Barking chiuauas (I think I spelled it wrong?)
Screeching brakes
My sister screaming/chewing with her mouth open (seriously, she's 13 now!)
Bright lights being turned on unexpectedly

- Along those lines, police/ emergency vehicle sirens on radio advertisements you hear while driving in the car.

- That bell on cable Fox News for a (cue serious voice) "breaking news alert," when it turns out to be some stupid
little thing that's barely even newsworthy, let alone breaking news.

To continue the list...

Greasy fingers
Someone jabbing me in the ribs
Anyone touching my computer besides me and my mother

People filing or clicking their nails.
Anyone touching my stomach, rubbing my back or a lingering touch.
Chomping sounds.
Babies screaming or crying.
The television being too loud.
When people pronounce "h" beginning with an h.
I'm sure there's many more

Its like along with the baby brain new mothers get a lobotomy on that part of the brain that allows you to care remotely about anyone but themselves and their child.
I soo agree with this part. And I also can't stand most new mothers/mothers of one young child, as it seems that all they ever want to talk about is their kid. Sometimes I just want to say, "Look lady, I don't have any interest about your stupid kid. Can you stop bringing him up in conversation so friggin much?"

But I don't think this is limited to people who have no children, I have known it from forums that even some pregnant women get sick of this.

My other 'nails on a chalkboard'...

1.The idea of biting down on a piece of dry cotton cloth. Not neccesarily the actual doing of such a thing, but just the idea.

2. When people talk with uncleared mucus in their throat. They make this gurgling sound when they talk, and it makes me want to clear my throat.

3. The sound of someone gagging or throwing up. I HATE this sound, and it is one of the few sounds that will make me promptly leave a room.

4. People talking about their sexual activities. With few exceptions (such as when it's related to infertility) this is another HATE. Oftentimes it is someone who really shouldn't be having sex (such as teenagers) or it involves nauseating details that it makes me want to gag. This is one of the few things that will make me get very angry, and is the major reason why I avoid the adult/women's forums here in WP.

5. The word 'homophobe.' Not so much that I think it's overused (it is) but more it's phonetic sound. It sounds like the person's mouth is full of glue while they speak the word, and the low phenomes it inherantly has makes me want to punch them when they say it. This might be related to the idea that these sounds are distantly related to the ones used when someone speaks with a mucus-filled throat, so maybe that's why it bothers me. :?

The metallic screeching that trash trucks make when they brake
The really strident pitch that tornado sirens hit at a certain point in their cycle

Both of them make me feel like someone is driving metal spikes through my temples

I hate "Shhh!"

I hate voices that sound "wet."

I hate chewing sounds.

I hate coughing.

This list is not complete.

Wow... even as an incomplete list, it almost totally speaks for me.
Those are some of the worst sounds for me as well .

People scuffing their feet - pick your damn feet up and walk properly!

Announcements in supermarkets - they're too loud, invasive and usually irrelevant.

People who chew with their mouth open - Ew? Also the sound, double EW!

Anyone touching me. Ever.
As of late, I've become a lot more sensitive to touch. It's gotten to the point where I don't like leaning back in chairs because the chair touching me drives me crazy. (Along with that, clothing tags and my hair touching the back of my neck.)

Teenage girls.
I don't know if this counts, but I hate every teenage girl I see. I'm ashamed to be one.

The sound of forks clanking on plates.

Squeaky foods- Green beans are a big offender here. I can practically feel the squeak for a long time after it has happened. It's awful. It really is comparable to nails on a chalkboard.

Also, babies screaming.
