I don't act out in a meltdown. I have it in my head. Then I sort of shut down. Does this happen to you? Because from most of the info I read I learned that meltdowns are sort of violent.

This is basically what happens to me, yes.
I imagine flipping that desk over, or bolting out the door, but I surely don't (though I have been very close.) Instead, I shut down, or I just put my head down, or both.

I visualize really bad stuff though, like cutting or jumping off a bridge, but I am positive i would never do that.

Mine are mental shutdowns... no violence, or communication.

Absolutely. I have imaginary weaponry with which I wreak imaginary havoc. I had someone once comment how calm I was amid the chaos (i.e. bartending). He couldn't hear me screaming on the inside.

I think meltdowns work differently for different people. In my home, me and one other resident both have 'outward' meltdowns in which furniture flies, things get smashed and everything is very loud and sometimes violent. The other resident and one of my friends both have 'inward' meltdowns. They both go very quiet, become non-communicative and non-responsive. I have had 'inward' meltdowns as well though.

I think I must be in a minority - I don't think I've ever had a meltdown. :? How are they defined/what are they & what are they like, etc?

I'm one who has the internal meltdowns. I just withdraw from what's going on around me and find a quiet corner while my m,ind flips out.

Most of mine are internal. Every now and then I'll have an external meltdown. Mine became increasingly internal the older I got.

I just go quiet and just withdraw from anyone and don't talk to them until I'm ready.

They're different for different people; I haven't done it, but typing in "meltdown" in the search bar at the top will probably bring up a lot of topics where people describe what they're like for them.
I don't really have them either, but I have "shutdowns", which is a lot like what some of the other people in this thread are describing.

They manifest themselves in different ways. Generally speaking, it is any situation where you can't take it any more.

For some people, they go into a rage. Some people run away. Some people just stop thinking.

Whenever I do have meltdowns, I rarely ever act them out. When I do, some may consider it weird, or violent, like hitting a wall. But it rarely happens. Ever.

Usually I just go quiet and leave the premises.

As I've gotten older my meltdowns have gotten more and more external, but they used to be entirely internal and I still will have internal meltdowns. I'm pretty sure I started externalizing them because of being scared of being too private.

However, I won't do anything more violent than throwing a pillow or punching a pillow, most of what I have to worry about is just screaming at people who usually don't deserve it.
