Not necessarily low function.
As I´ve understood the explanation: During the development in an AS/autistic brain, some areas have weaker connections, than average brains, whereas some single areas develop more than average bloodvessels, which means more bloodflow, more oxygene and thereby a higher activity, - and savant abilities/splinterskills occur.

When I'm half asleep my brain can create some very beautiful and complete pieces of music on the spot. It could be an orchestra or it could be a pop song with lyrics that actually make sense. When I'm awake I still have this ability to a degree, but I would definitely not call it a savant skill. I can also have photographic memory when I'm asleep, but I definitely don't have it when I'm awake. :(

Yes, I know that free-range musical creativity. It can occur, when half asleep and it does occur, when I am occupied with painting/color.
I believe, it is a state, that could be accessed by training "flow". That is when it happens and flow can be trained.
I also think, that the photographic memory, you speak of could be trained methodically. You do have it, basically. The rest is technique.

I find that depriving myself of sleep and food allows me to write songs, it almost feels like I'm normal, where I don't need to stim
