The Mayans never said the world was going to end when that particular cycle ended (2012, for us). It would just be the end of one cycle and the beginning of another.

Getting all stressed out about it makes about as much sense as fretting about New Year's Eve because it's the last day on our calendar. The January 1st comes and we begin another cycle. The cycle they described was a lot longer but they were describing a cycle nonetheless.

If the Myans and Aztecs could predict the future with accuracy they would still be around today because they would have known not to trust the Spanish and not to treat them as gods. I bet that stone calander stops at 2012 becaue it is time to carve a new calander.

There's also the question: Does it mean the world will come to a complete end, and we'll all be wiped off the face of the planet basically at once, or does it just mean it will be the end of the world as we know it, and something will happen to very drastically change everything (most likely for the worst) from how it is now?

I don't believe the first will ever happen. However, I do think that many many years from now, long after anyone on WP right now has died, that the world will be a drastically different place, so much so that the thought of it being like it is today would almost be like an old wives tale or a fantasy story had it not been recorded in history documents. I think My family and I are going to do the same thing on December 20/21 2012 that we did the day and time the rapture was supposed to happen- Mock it. We all came into the same room and counted down and then laughed because there were people who ACTUALLY believed it was going to happen, some of which spend hundreds of dollars to make sure their animals were cared for when they floated up to heaven.

And if they aren't, for once, we'll never know, because we'll all be dead, so what does it matter?

Kind of a stupid thing to worry about if you ask me...

More damage has been done to individuals who thought it was true due to the fact that they believed it, prepared for it, and it never happened, than to those who ignored it and kept living as if life would go on.

Now don't go spoiling perfectly good paranoia with facts.

What a buzz kill.

This topic reminds me of this cartoon:

I've seen that cartoon plenty of times Ellytoad and it's so true.

We don't panic when our normal calendar ends every 31st December, so why should we threat about the end of a Mayan calendar?

LOL! Yeah. I don't buy that BS either. Something will bring and end to our civilization eventually but no one knows when. It would likely be: a computer virus/global network failure, a real virus (12 Monkeys!), overpopulation leading to global war over resources or an catastrophic global/space event.
