Learning languages is one of my interests. I think I'm pretty good at learning the written language and learning grammar rules, but I can never understand foreign languages when spoken by native speakers.

I am awful at foreign languages, but I attribute that to my poor memory. I took first Latin and then German in high school, and while I passed, I didn't seem to learn or retain much of either. In college, when I learned I had to have 2 semesters of language to meet state degree requirements, I decided on Spanish as I live in an area with a large hispanic population and thought it would have real-world benefit. I got through the first year okay, but it took me 3 tries at the second semester before I got a passing grade, and I had spent many more than the required 30 hours in the language lab listening to tapes and watching videos, but simply could not get it down. My problem was learning the vocabulary: too many words to learn in too short a period. I did excelent on the grammar and conjugation part, I just had no idea what the words meant.
I really wish I could find a way to learn it, as there are many people I work with that speak Spanish as a primary language, and I can't understand more than a few words they say (but I keep trying).

I speak English and French, and I enjoy it very much. French was introduced to my school when I was in Grade 3, and I took to it right away. I stayed with it all the way up to the end of high school, even though it wasn't mandatory there. I thought it was so easy to learn, I was a little bit surprised that some people couldn't pick it up as quickly as I did. Unfortunately, I don't get to use it very much, so I have to occasionally read French-language newspapers and books to keep my skills from deteriorating. I also wish my TV had captioning, so I could watch French CBC and TVA, because it's easier for me to read French than to listen to it.

Du hast rescht

OK, so eyen buekshtabe geandert ist! 8-(

tehler du dansk?

OK, I guess I'll be serious. YES! HEY, you made a PROPER complaint! A coworker ridiculed english saying that it wasn't phonetic, and gave me examples! And I told him ******YOU ARE WRONG*******! !! !! !! Those ARE phonetic! In fact, they are NOT english! They were words ADOPTED into english from french, and kept their PHONETIC french pronounciations. Just today, I heard someone pronounce envoy in english! That is WRONG! it should be pronounced as if it was spelled onvoy.

BTW the right bit IS in several germanic languages!

Du hast recht!(you are right)
Es geht recht!(it goes to the right)

Mi hablar es asi, asi.

I also know a small amount of Japanese, but so far only phrases such as "gomenasai" (you're going to need to use this one a lot if you ever visit Japan), "sayonara", and "arigatou."

I take to foreign languages like a duck to water. But, like many others have said, my talent is limited only to learning vocabulary words and reading/writing skills. I have a very hard time speaking and listening. It's labored. So, like I was in English as a young child, I'm hyperlexic in foreign languages. :D

Language freak here :o

I'm doing French for my A-Levels (qualifications in England and Wales,) and I've also studied Spanish and Welsh. Also hoping to self-learn Latin soon.

My first language was German. I learned to read well in English by the time I was six years old, and took Spanish in high school and college, getting virtually straight As. I did well in the written work, but I can't speak on a par with native speakers.

I love learning languages.
