im now 43 and ever since i was a teenager i have had a severe dislike of music, especially anything with a lyrical component. sometimes i can stand soundtracks to movies but i could count on one hand the number of times i have actually sat and listened to music intentionally in the last 25 years. usually its because of the intense emotional response i get from it which leaves me feeling uncomfortable and vulnerable. if im bored and want to listen to something it will be a chat show or discussion on some topic that interests me, usually computers and technology.
could this be an AS trait, as i have never seen any other similar posts, or is it just me being crazy in general.

I wouldn't exactly say I hate music but I almost never purposely listen to music.

I was this way all the way until I was age 13. Before then all my peers liked all the latest music, rap, rock, pop, etc. I thought it was just beyond dumb but it seemed like it was almost needed to fit in.

Then at 13 I realized I liked video game music, then into my mid to late teens I realized there were 1 or 2 songs I didn't mind that'd play on the radio statio (I was forced to listen to them since I was in the car).

Then when I owned my own car, I started listening to random songs on my drive up to community college and liked even more songs.. bought 2 cds even, the only 2 I bought and only a total of 3 I owned ever in life.

The exception to this was the space jam soundtrack which I think I owned at age 12? Although I hate r kelly with a passion now, I liked the song "I believe I can fly" when it was first released and before he went pedo.

It's funny you should ask this question because I've noticed that certain people who are aware of me having AS seem to think I like music. why is this? I don't mind certain bands but I also very rarely listen to music. the sounds I like are natural sounds eg. birds flapping their wings or the waves on the sea, those two are my favourites.

I don't believe it's an AS trait. Too many of us do like music. I, in fact, love music and could not live without it.

It could be YOUR AS trait though. We're all unique in our AS. I couldn't say for certain you don't like it because of your AS, but I couldn't say for certain it's not because of your AS either. I don't see any reason it could not be, but I'm not familiar with how AS affects you.

Kind of an ambiguous answer, I know, but I just don't know you. You know yourself better than anyone else. If you're extremely familiar with how AS affects you and can think of how your dislike for music relates to other aspects of your AS, I would say it is likely part of YOUR AS. I think you're probably better equipped than anyone here to make that determination. If you think it is, and can think of ways to explain why it is, you're most likely right.

I love music and I rarely listen to recordings. I like live shows, where you can watch and dance (aka stim.)

Usually I like the music in my head better than what's on the stereo. And I don't like being around someone who listens to music 24/7. Sometimes I really like music at work in the kitchen, as long as it's not too slow or too crazy. Steady as she goes, there, sailor.

Still, music is one of my favorite things ever.

I thought I'd add to this discussion and explain that I often feel v uncomfortable listening to music because of overly strong reactions that I can' control without putting a lot of effort into it: even music I don't really enjoy can make me cry, get goosebumps, choke up and just lose track of what I am doing.
It is so strong that I have to be careful what I listen to - but sometimes in shops or cafes I cant switch it off - so I have to try to block off the impact of the emotions -

I was wondering if anyone else every got that one ?

I actually love music very much! The "intense emotional response" that you say turns you away from music is actually what makes me appreciate it so much, oddly enough. When I was much younger, I also used to say that I couldn't stand music at all (pretty much all I had been exposed to at that point in my life was pop songs on the radio, and I thought that this was all that music was). However I later realized that this was just because up until that point I hadn't heard any "good" music that I really liked lol.

I get that way with music with lyrics, but never with instrumental music. With lyrics I am constantly visualizing whatever the song is about. ( and with some songs it can be intense, confusing, etc) With instrumental music I can just "feel" it. It is like a direct connection to my emotions without the whole narative.

Interesting. I seem to fall in between. I like music a lot, and can even get "high" from it, but sometimes I don't want my mood affected that much (it can be emotionally exhausting), so at times I purposely don't listen.

I.e. I listen to podcasts or audiobooks whenever I'm out, since I want to tune out the environmental noise, but don't want to be emotionally affected too much to by music.

I love my music. I have it playing fro the minute I wake up until the minute that I go to sleep at night. A day without music is like a day without life. I find that my CD collection helps to ward off flashbacks.

I love music. It has been my obsession for my entire life. I find most classical music very boring.
I love the emotionally connection I have with music. I can hear certain lyrics and get extremely passionate and start crying.

I have a dislike of the popular music of today, but I don't have a dislike for all music.

I love music, but prefer it without lyrics.
They distract from the melody and rhythm which is why I listen to it in the first place.
