Sarcasm and irony sometimes aren't understood not even by those who aren't aspies!

I think that doctor has not the notion that this sindrom can affect people in different ways.

I use sarcams and irony. My boy, who's only 6 does too. Probably the problem is when the others do that to us. If they're serious, we take them serious. In messages like this, we can be sarcastic and noone gets the complete idea.

I'm the most sarcastic person I know, almost to a fault.

I don't always understand other people though. Sometimes I stupidly ask people if they're being sarcastic, which can cause more friction.

80% of the stuff I say is sarcastic, and I can nearly always tell when someone else is using sarcasm. I also love irony, it is delicious! :D

Now that I think about it, I developed the ability to use sarcasm pretty late, too. I think I have a tendency to overuse it these days. I also think sometimes I may come across as sarcastic even when I'm being completely genuine, and I sometimes have to point that out.

I try to minimize the sarcasm when I'm talking to my 3 and a half year old, because she hasn't grasped the concept of saying one thing and meaning something else just yet, and it confuses her. As for irony, I love it (and I mean REAL irony, not the Alanis Morisette kind).

Yes, me too. If it's very subtle, I can't always tell. Like the time I suggested my co-worker (at a kindergarten) could play the role of the Christmas tree in the class play and she very enthusiastically said "Oh, thanks!". Another co-worker had to explain to me that she was being sarcastic.

I can be very sarcastic as well, I just have trouble recognizing others' sarcasm.

Actually, as I recall, I could use it before that, but chose not to. It was almost like cussing. I don't cuss either. I certainly could, etc... I just don't.

Sarcasm and irony are my birthright as an Englishman.

I can put them to good use myself, but recognising them becomes a lot more difficult if somebody else is deploying them.

While i am able to use sarcasm and irony, usually to good effect, i also have trouble recognising when others use it, especially as my father says something ironic or sarcastic, and when i ask him whether it's true or not, his reply will also be either sarcastic or ironic.

For some reason people think i am being sarcastic when i am actually being sincere; and yoiu can NOT be sincere when saying you are being sincere.

I'm actually often the 'sarcastic one,' and one person in my group says I always talk in a sarcastic manner. Must be all the broccoli.

I can do sarcasm but often people dont understand it or take me seriously.

Often I dont notice sarcasm by others and just get confused by the apparently stupid comments they just made.

I been told i dont get the tone right when im sarcastic.

I know I'm capable of both when I feel comfortable with who I'm around. When I was younger though, I didn't have it nor could I understand it. I had a very hard time understanding other people's sarcasm until I was in my 20's I think. Of course a lot of people saw me as naive or stupid but oh well.

I've read where NT's are born with the natural ability to understand others verbal and non-verbal queues. Aspie's however have to learn it. The older we get and the more living we do the more we get it and can use it.

For the 2nd time; anyone who selected the last option, please state, what was your reason?

Did you take it literally or did you understand that I was being sarcastic? There's no shame in having taken it literally if you did. I think this is quite important as 23% of poll respondents selected that option. Perhaps in hindsight I made a rod for my own back including that option.

Well put.

I'd say based on the AS person I know best that some can recognise and/or do both and some can't (the stereotypical autistic who says and takes everything literally); the troubles are what Seigneur said, trying to do it and having it come out awkwardly and, a social not intellectual one, knowing who and when they're appropriate to use them with, or making more mistakes in that department than a normal person.

And like with a lot of us it can vary with me depending on how tired or stressed I am - the worse your day or situation the less you can compensate and act normal so the AS gets worse.
