As far as I know there won't be anything but the diagnosis of autism with a level of severity attached. Does that mean people currently diagnosed will have to get diagnosed again, or does their current Dx get automatically translated to the new system? I wonder about that.

I really hate this new DSM thing. I hate the fact that NVLD isn't being recognized as a specific disorder, I've learned just from being on this board, that NVLD and Aspergers certainly aren't the same at all. They're similar, but NVLD affects you VERY specifically, so in my case, I'm likely Aspergers, but it's more that the Aspergers is caused by my NVLD.

I heard that in this year the aspergers diagnosis will be obsolete. What does this mean exactly?
Actually, I could care less what the mental health community chooses to call what we have. As Shakespeare said, a rose by any other name is just as sweet. By the same token, an aspie by any other name is just as different. Let them play their games.

From what I know... Some time in 2013, Aspergers won't be recognized by the DSM, and Aspies are going to be labeled as Autistic. Some countries might continue to use Aspergers, though. They're also making other edits. Oh, and NVLD is comorbid to autism. So, I think it might be 2 things.
At the moment AS is an autism spectrum disorder called asperger syndrome. Soon, it will be an autism spectrum disorder called nothing. It will just be an autism spectrum disorder. Which it always has been. They're not getting rid of the diagnosis for our set of symptoms, they're just changing the name.

I've always called Asperger's Syndrome as Asperberger's Syndrome. I'll probably never get used to calling it high functioning autism. When I think of autism I always thing of it being more severe on the spectrum for some reason.
