Yes, I tend to do this as well if I fall asleep facing down. I trap my hands under me and shimmy lightly. I did it once at someone's house in front of them, and that was the last time I did it in front of people. They knew I wasn't, but made fun of me for trying to, ahem, 'stimulate' myself. It doesn't help that I make involuntary, guttural noises when I'm incredibly tired.

Hm, so now I'm curious as to why so many of us prefer sleeping on the couch. I feel like Goldilocks when I sleep on the couch -- it's just right, and it treats my back so well. My parents hate that I don't sleep in my bedroom...

I deal with insomnia on a regular basis, though I tend to sleep better during the day.

When I was a child I used to sleep with my head under my pillow.

The most comfortable position for me when going to sleep is somewhat contorted, similar to Marty McFly's sleeping position in Back to the Future in the scenes where he wakes up to the alarm clock.

I toss and turn a lot, and can be quite violent when doing so. I've woken up with sheets and blankets on the floor. I've woken up with the fitted sheet peeled completely off the mattress. I've woken up with my pillow across the room. The worst was when I woke up and realized I had broken one of the cross-pieces of my futon in my sleep. It was down by my lower legs, but there were no marks on my legs...very odd.

I used to sleep on the floor quite often when I was much younger.

While I have difficulty going to sleep and staying asleep, I sleep quite heavily when I do. My dad once told me that when I was a child I had fallen out of bed onto the floor without waking up. It was a typical box spring + mattress, so I'm guessing it was maybe 2.5 feet off the floor? He said he heard the thud, found me on the floor still asleep, then lifted me off the floor and back onto the bed without me waking up. I've also slept through some pretty powerful earthquakes.

Same here. I fell from the top bunk once (1,2 meters?) and slept right trough it, until the teachers woke me up when they found me on the floor.

as a kid: my dad used to tuck me in by tucking the blankets all around me, shoulders to feet real tight, I couldn't sleep without being tucked like that until I was nine. Even then I still needs lots of blankets. I always pulled the blankets up to cover half of my face - up to my nose, sometimes my whole face. I usually ended up curled around my pillows instead of laying my head on them. I regularly slept on my stomach. I usually slept like the dead once I did finally fall alseep and was hard to wake up.

as an adult: still need lots of blankets, still tuck myself in real tight. Still pull the covers up over my nose (I tuck my nose into the collar of my shirts on a regular basis too, usually when I'm sitting around) Sleep with a body pillow. Still sleep like the dead and still can't wake up in the morning. I love sleeping on the couch for the back support.

Apparently I often sleep on my back with my legs up, like this:

Really weird! I don't start off like that, but my body just does it.

This is a bit of an old thread, but I found it through a search of "sleep on couch," ha! I was hoping I wasn't the only one.

My husband doesn't understand why I'm so attached to sleeping on the couch, or sometimes sleeping the wrong direction in the bed. Even though my bed is comfy, I would still rather sleep at night in my living room. It's more comforting to me. I don't sleep well anyway.

I also get way too hot in the night and have started sleeping either without covers or with minimal coverage. I've always stuck my foot out of the covers, also saying "it regulates my temperature."

I sleep underneath many layers of blankets because I like the feeling of pressure it gives me. I also sleep with plush toys. I own a sizable collection, but my favorites are my Alice (from Disney's Alice in Wonderland) and my Twilight Sparkle (from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic). Sometimes I wake up flat on my back with my legs crossed or bent at an angle.

I also need to take my second round of daily medication (which includes 3 MG of melatonin, 3 MG of Risperidone and .25 MG of Xanax) before I go to bed, because it cures my insomnia.

I don't like to have the covers over my head, but almost, as close as they can be without actually covering my nose. I need to breathe cool air while I sleep.

I like a little weight in my covers, but not too much. A light-to-mid-weight quilt is about right. Anything more is too heavy or bulky, and too hot. Has to be all cotton, no polyester filling.

I like cold sheets. Tencel sheets are the best. The room needs to be cool. I like to stick my feet out from under the covers when I get too hot.

I have to hug a small pillow to my chest to be able to sleep. I need to have both hands tucked up under my chin against my neck, with the covers pulled against my face.

I can't stand any wrinkles. The bedding and my clothes have to be smooth underneath my body.

I have always had a hard time sleeping in the same bed with another person, but I hope one day I'll feel comfortable (literally) sleeping with someone.

hey, i didn't realise the thread was resurrected. i am watching the topic but not getting any notifications, hmmph.

i have a great memory foam mattress that is helping my sleep, though i tend to get hot at night. my back doesn't hurt as much as it used to. i sleep with a new R2D2 plushie that my daughter gave me. there is a window alongside my bed but at the foot, so i feel safe because i can see out a little bit when my head is on the pillow.

thanks for sharing your sleep oddities and preferences, everyone.

They're great but they hold the body heat in. There is a topper that is blue memory foamed and the idea is this dissipates that heat.

They are expensive at 120 and this just at 1.5 inches thick. But you could put this over your existing foamer.

It takes me a while to eventually get round to sleeping, and when I do its usually in the early hours of the morning, unless my sleep is really messed up or if I've been working all day.

I'm actually quite sensitive to the heat when I'm actively trying to sleep so if I'm sleeping in the middle of the day, or if it's a warm summer's night then I have a habit of sleeping on top of my covers. Whereas sometimes if I'm somewhere trying to stay awake but it's really warm, I can doze off anyway - and this can be a problem all year round due to the tendency of some places to put their central heating on far too high in Winter - I'm happy with about 14-16 degrees Celsius.

Otherwise, on cold nights I stay on top of the covers, but then wrap it across and around me like a cocoon almost. I also tend to spread my pillows in an upside down V around me - one for the body overlapping with one for the head and then one for each arm. I did also sleep with cuddly toys until I was about 15 - I didn't really need them there for my teen years, but I figured they had nowhere else to go so kept them in bed with me anyway. They've been relegated to the wardrobe since, but I still see them every morning.

I need to sleep under at least two blankets, preferably three. I can't sleep unless I have some weight on top of me. I also need for the room to be as dark as possible, but not so dark that I feel like I've gone blind. I hug a stuffed animal. I generally go to sleep with the TV on because otherwise my brain keeps me up for several hours.

Some nights especially before a big project I sleep with a twenty pound weight vest laid on my back. Days where I have had too much sensory input I sleep with little to no clothing. Sometimes a combination of both.
