Mimicking friends stutter
A friend of mine has been under stress lately and has developed a stutter. We were at their house yesterday and as the night went by I found I too began stuttering. It was quite embarrassing as it could have been seen as taking the piss had it not been close friends!
I've known for a while that I do pick up words, phrases and tone from other people but I didn't realise I done it to such a degree as shown above. I'm now sitting thinking that if I was in a room full of people who are stuttering or showing other signs of speech impediment then I'd likely mimic them without actually trying to!
Is this typical for autism and does anyone know how to prevent this or minimise it?
Thanks
To some degree this is something everyone does, but I'm sure you know that. I know that a lot of aspies (especially girls) adopt a "observe and imitate" way of behaving to cope in social situations, so intuitively I would think that if this is something your very used to this could result in problems you are describing.
In high school my dad once thought I used chewing tobacco (snus) as I had "adopted" the speaking pattern of someone who does (only lasted a short time fortunately lol)
