Getting help without recording my diagnosis
Is there a way for me to get help for my ASD without getting an official diagnosis? I asked a few doctors to refer me to a specialist about it without recording my diagnosis, but they said they can't do it. Someone said that he got help from a specialist without an official diagnosis - how?
As far as I know, there are specialist who would help me, but I'd have to pay money for that. Is that true? I'd still prefer a free specialist, because judging by the average wages, I'd expect the cost to be ridiculously high.
Also, please don't use this thread to convince me to get a diagnosis - I have checked everything and I'm determined to first try without getting a diagnosis, and then if that won't work, I'd consider a diagnosis.
I was thinking it's supposed to be something like that. But didn't someone say that he/she gets treatment without being diagnosed?
Also, is there a way to learn about what someone's exact program of treatment consists of, so that I do the same things for myself? Maybe I should start a separate thread for that.

You could contact the National Autistic Society. They will help with anyone experiencing problems due to ASDs, diagnosis or not. It might or might not be the sort of help you want or need but they will offer free support and advice. My mum and workplace contacted them with the advice of my GP and a psychiatrist I went to see once and I don't have an official diagnosis.

You do not have to have "diagnosis" as they call it these days on the medical record with your insurance company to get treatment for autism. You can go to private psychiatrists and doctors who will diagnose you and document it in their records (which can never be legally released) and where pay out of pocket and your diagnosis is never sent to the insurance company....or you can go to specialists and have them treat your for the symptoms of autism alone. Most really good doctors are out of pocket anyway these days. My mom and dad were very adamant about that originally when I was a child (when I didn't have insurance anyway and everything was out of pocket) and also during my teen and college yaers (when they paid for everything out of pocket for that reason despite having insurance). To be honest, my psychiatrist told me specifically there is no cure for autism therefore they can and only will be treating the symptoms anyhow. However, she did say that if you ever want to work for governmental agencies or higher profile jobs they have for many years screened for uncurable mental illness such as autism or what was often labelled "childhood and adulthood schizophrenia" when she was just starting out (ie she just retired in her 60's) and also blatant schizophrenia as rule outs for such jobs. She told me this specifically and since she was older I'm now sure how true that is these days but it's worth noting. However, I am one of firm belief that if you were not diagnosed with or treated for autism and did not have symtpoms of autism as a child (ie delayed speaking, etc) then I personally do not think you have to worry about it being truly autism. From experience doctor experiences for any illness can be very draining and tiring and it's you're honest and disclose as much pertinent information of your medical histry as you can comfortably disclose be with any doctor you meet for proper treatment. Nonetheless, best of luck whichever route you decide to go!
