[Australia] Anyone studying at QUT?
Hey everyone,
Today I am very pleased with myself because I have been offered my first preference at the Queensland University of Technology. I will be doing a double degree in Information Technology and Business.
I wonder if any members here go to QUT or even just stay around the Brisbane area and would be interested in chatting. I will be moving up from Adelaide in the next couple of weeks which is where I am right now. I will be looking for share accomodation aswell so if you are looking for someone to share with let me know. Would make things much easier for me!
Cheers

Hey,
Congrats on getting into uni , QUT is apparently awesome - it might be an idea to get in touch with the disability support centre and see if they can help, as for accommodation there are normally flyers posted on student bulletin boards or check out the guild.
http://www.counselling.qut.edu.au/money ... ousing.jsp seems to be a good website to check out. I don't go to QUT but i am studying as well.
Best of Luck for your first year.

I still have a year to go (in 12 presently), but my brother's just about to start at QUT. He deferred for two years to get a bit of money up and so that he's earned the $1500 necessary to get Aus Study allowances, and is going to move into a house with a guy he went to school with and a girl that the guy knows.
If you're still looking for accomodation then you should really hurry, because I know it took my brother and his friends a very long time with lots of hard work involved to find a place to live, and he and his friends were very lucky to find the place they did. A lot of realestate agents won't even consider you if you don't present them with previous rental references, phone bills, bank statements, etc. so it can be very hard if you haven't rented before. I also know this because I recently got accepted into a special academy of science, mathematics and technology with a full scholarship but I was unable to go because I could not find any accomodation (it's a new academy opening up...well, open now, at the UQ Toowong campus).
Which campus are you going to? My brother got into Engineering, which is at Garden Point campus. I'm not sure exactly what course his friend is doing, but I know it has something to do with IPT or Design (well, something on/to do with computer anyway).
It's possible I could end up going to QUT next year myself, so who knows, if you like your course and are still doing it next year I might see you around sometime!
Best of luck!

Thanks girls,
shazabella: In regards to asking for disability support, I feel odd about that. Am not sure how it could help?. I'm still getting used to this "Aspie" label...still very new.
suicine: It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation for those coming fresh out of highschool, how can you really be expected to have employment experience and have earned a wad of cash all the while achieving good grades? I've been working for a few years since school now so it's all good for me. At least now if I go on Austudy I can get some of the large amounts I've already paid to the tax office dribbled back to me. I hate the idea of getting charity but essentially it's my own money coming back so I don't feel bad I should be fine for renting as I have a full years rental history under my belt and have gone over that $1500 threshold thing. That's cool about your bro, my course will be at Gardens point aswell.
Anyways, looking forward to the challenge .

I just asked a friend for clarification on this:
According to the Queensland Health Dept. Autism (or Aspergers) is a learning disability. This in turn has it's advantages such as extra non-working or working time during exams, clarification where needed, etc... It also makes obtaining an extension (if required) easier.
