The initial psychiatrist I've seen ended up referring me to a psychiatrist who specializes in children/adolescent psychology and development disorder. Is this the most suited person to treat me in your opinion? What is your experience? Have you been referred and/or what is the main area of expertise of the professional you see?

P.S.
I'm in the United States (New York City) - seems like the session time is 45 minutes. Is it like that everywhere?

The psychologist I saw advertised herself as specializing in AS, anger management, and relationships online, but in person she didn't seem as familiar with AS as I thought she was. She focused more on the last two items. I wasn't referred. I came up with the idea completely on my own after a massive meltdown at work last summer.

See a neurologist specialized in developmental disorders, if you can. If not, a child psychologist with experience working with adults. And if you can't get any of those, then find someone who is open-minded and willing to do some research on ASDs so he can evaluate you properly.

Said psycho will need to be a clinical one to diagnose you [with anything]. Well, that's how it is here in Oz.

A clinical psycho specializing in ASDs would be the best [out of the psychos], but you have to look for them. A generic clinical psycho who has ASDs as an interest, but sees everyone, would be ok too.

I've normally only seen child psy's that deal with adhd/add/aspergers and such. They've talked to me and always said aspergers because if I lay out my thought patterns to them and my thoughts on things... they literally tell me "normal people don't think that way".

Then they medicate and make sure you don't fly off the handle.

The person who diagnosed me was a neuropsychologist who specialized in Autism Spectrum Disorders and ADHD.

He normally works with children, but does work with adults as well. He does a lot of diagnosing people, and then recommending counselors and therapists from the people he knows that'd be best for the person.
