Tea tree oil would probably work, but it smells REALLY strong. I try to go with unscented or lightly scented deodorants because i don't like the smell of most.

Old Spice High Endurance solid works wonders for me - the blue stick, not the runny gel or the powdery stuff (And I agree, dry sticks or spray with aluminum aren't good. In fact they give me some wicked irritation). I also have to wash several times sometimes, depending on exercise and especially my diet, sniff test, wash again until I'm sure, then maybe a couple times more just to be sure because we all tend to get used to our own smell and not notice.

But don't overlook other things too like diet and activity!! If I drink just one cup of coffee, I kinda stink no matter what and could probably do with 2 showers a day. It makes all the difference in the world. But if my diet is very clean, even if I forget to shower for a day (or the occasional 2 lol) I still don't stink most of the time. In fact, I've had people tell me I smell amazing on the day after or 2nd day after a shower so it's not the smell of the soap, just from my natural scent and pheremones I guess.

Caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and foods with red meat, garlic, onions, seafood, and spicy things (savory and hot spices) and not drinking enough tend to make you smell and taste worse in every way. Tea, fresh fruits and vegetables, plenty of water, lemonaid, and less savory spices (cinnamon, anything that works with sweet stuff) are known to improve all of this instead.

extremely good advice here.

antonblock, nobody can really and truly smell their own body odour, mostly due to a weird biological thing called "olfactory fatigue". we are overly familiar with our own smells so it's not noticeable anymore. so don't expect that you will ever catch your own scent. if you ever smelled a person that has body odour, THAT is what you smell like to other people, you just can't tell.

about aluminum in deodorant... that's not really a concern. it was found that people with Alzheimer's tended to have aluminum in their brain. it was not known how it got in their brains, but the public heard it and went a little nuts throwing away aluminum pans and switching to anti-perspirant.

http://alzheimers.org.uk/site/scripts/d ... umentID=99

there is also no proof of any link between aluminum in deodorant and breast cancer at the current time. the press has a way of taking bits of science and scaring us with it.

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/fact ... isk/AP-Deo

if you are not sure which kind to buy, try getting like travel sized sample sticks of anti-perspiant or deodorant to see what works for you. you can see the percentage of the active ingredient on the label (usually aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum chloride, aluminum sulfate, or aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex glycine).

anti-perspirants control wetness and deodorants control odour by killing bacteria. i find that deodorants make my armpits get wet and i still stink. so i use anti-perspirant.

i've found that my BO is less intense since i gave up red meat and pork, as well as cut my consumption of dairy to a small fraction of what it was. aside from this, there is no substitute for scrubbing off the funk in the shower every day, and using a deodorant which masks sometimes unpleasant testosterone-based odors. oh, don't forget to at least rinse one's mouth one full minute with a good listerine-type mouthwash between each meal, and to brush/floss/antiseptic rinse every evening [with a soft-bristle brush] before bed, as well as to drink lots of water during the day.

I would suggest Secret Clinical strength. I think it's Secret that puts that out, but it's a clinical strength deoderant. Also, get some Shower to Shower powder, and put that on after you shower in the morning.

It should be possible to dry your skin with a hair dryer after using deodorant. I find it helpful to shave my armpits, but there's no knowing whether that would help you. It takes a week or so to grow back after you shave it.

If you are worried about "chemicals", don't be. Deodorant works by killing the bacteria on your skin. I guess you could stay away from antiperspirant-type deodorant, which also discourages sweating; there have been some claims that it clogs your pores.

As for odor: Yeah, tea tree oil smells really strong. Don't bother with it; you'll be in overload for good.

Try to look for "unscented" or "hypoallergenic" deodorant. There are also "aloe vera" scented deodorants, which aren't really scented at all because aloe vera doesn't have a smell. Open up the tops and take a sniff while you're in the store, so you don't buy something you can't use.

I don't recommend salt- or crystal-type deodorant; it's not strong enough for most people. If you are a female who doesn't sweat much and doesn't do any physical labor, it might work; but beyond that... no.

You can tell you smell sweaty by wiping a tissue under your armpit and taking a sniff.

If worst comes to worst, I guess you could pack some baby wipes and wipe yourself down a couple times a day. (Unscented baby wipes, naturally.) You'd have to remember to do it of course but it's better than annoying people by smelling funky.

Remember that many neurotypicals react to body odor very similarly to the way autistic people react to sensory annoyances in general. It can actually be outright distressing to some NTs. So, yeah, you owe it to them to figure out a solution to this problem.

Could some of it be in your clothes? Try soaking them overnight in water with a cup of vingear added.
Smell comes from bacteria so the crystal mineral should work for that. I found the super deoderants that stopped sweating caused me to sweat from other places more.

I read some people do have a digestive problem that causes a smell from the skin.

Baking soda works better for deodorizing clothes, in my experience. Works well for gym socks, etc. A cup of baking soda, a gallon of water, and soak overnight. You'll have to wash it very well to get rid of all the baking soda afterward.

There are all kinds of things that can give a person a bad body odor. Eating things with garlic or onions will cause your skin to smell bad to other people but maybe not to yourself. It's just one of those weird facts. If you take garlic, maybe you could try odorless garlic capsules. If stuff you take or eat isn't anything to do with it, then you could also have a hormone imbalance, which could cause it.

The bottom line is that it's very rude for anyone to tell you that you smell bad, and it's embarrassing to hear someone say that. Most any adult should shower at least once a day, and use armpit deodorant, and be fine. Kids might get away without showering so often, but adults can't; at least in modern American culture. I'd think that if more than one person has said something to you, it might be something you do need to look into.

I have read that too, but there are also articles stating that aluminum (aluminum chloride) is perfectly safe. I think it's safe, and if you don't use something with aluminum chloride in it, there is no protection from armpits sweating.

One final note, don't spend your time out of clothing too long. Causes more sweat.

I use several different deodorants

I find this one works best so use it for special occasions where I dont want to sweat at all, its a 'dry' stick so quite good sensory wise but is poisonous so i dont use it regularly
Image

and i use this one for everyday as its not poisonous but it doesnt work extremely well
Image

and i also use pit rock stone when Ive still got water on me after the shower, its not poisonous and good sensory wise but doesnt work really well.

it might be worth your while taking a pack of fragrance free baby wipes with you to work and wiping your armpits (in the bathroom) during your break times.

Some good advice here already especially from hyperlexian.

Shower every morning and change your underwear and shirt every day. Yes, every day. Wash said underwear as hot as possible without it shrinking but certainly at 60C. This means buying stuff made out of cotton not some easy care mix or artificial fabric.

A lot of deodorants just try and mask bad smell whereas anti-perfpirant actually prevents armpit sweating. Yes it does so by clogging pores and essentially pushing the sweating to other areas of your body but this really helps with BO. The aluminium is nothing to worry about.

I recommend Vaseline Intensive Care anti-perspirant spray. Aloe fresh is the one I like, there is also Active fresh which I don't like.

What others have said about spicy foods etc is true but you don't want to over complicate your life by having a super fussy restricted diet. Washing is easier. In the summer you may want to shower again after work.

Someone above said that it's harsh of people to complain about someone's BO. I disagree. It's much harsher to be ostracised and people pulling faces behind someone's back, which would be the British way of (not) dealing with it. What is harsh is having to work in close proximity to someone with BO especially for a person with an acute sense of smell.

So you are right to want to do something about it. I hope it works for you.

I stopped using deodorant. Helps keep nosy intrusive pesky people away. When you stink they don't want to get close enough to hurt you.

Shave your armpits once a week, and shower every morning. That will eliminate most of the BO.

Use a deodorant if you need to, but at that point it probably won't be needed.

BUT!

What kind of BO are we talking about? Sweat? Or something else? Some people excrete unusual chemical compounds they can't smell but are very objectionable to those around them. It is a rare genetic condition. Maybe this is what's going on?

^^^most women shave and they still stink if they don't use pitstick. *everyone* has body odour to some degree or another. hair does definitely intensify the effect, but even without hair the OP will have an odour.

i agree that he could have a rare condition, but emitting body odour is universal.
