I'm curious as to see if anyone here was misdiagnosed prior to getting an ASD diagnosis?

I got diagnosed with ADHD and OCD about 7 years ago but much of what my symptoms are could be explained by AS. Impulse control? Obsessions with people? Yup.

Anyone else go into the ASD diagnosis being diagnosed with something else? Did that original diagnosis change?

I don't yet have a professional AS diagnosis, but I'm pretty sure that's what I've got. I've been diagnosed by psychologists and psychiatrists with ADD, depression, anxiety, and was once told I probably had mild OCD, but I don't think that one counts as a diagnosis.

Yep. Since like middle school, I was just diagnosed generic depression and anxiety. Then finally, I got an eval done by the court system on me, and I was diagnosed NVLD, however I completely disregarded the NVLD diagnosis because they also diagnosed me schizoid PD type and schizoaffective, and the treatment people they referred me to said schizoid and schizoaffective shouldn't be diagnosed at my age (I was 17 at the time.) So I completely disregarded their diagnosis for that reason, I also thought they were just douchey in general. So for AS, once I did my own reading on NVLD, the diagnosis seemed dead on, and I even retook the IQ tests the best I could online, and yeah. For Aspergers, though, various professional people from just talking to me are like "Yeah he has it." But I've not actually gotten like, a typed out diagnostic report like my NVLD diagnosis, but most psychs after talking to me are like "Yep, you got Aspergers."

But yes, psychs in general really don't seem to know what to do with me. I've been misdiagnosed so so many times, it's very hard for me to take any psychs seriously. Most of the time the psychs were just like "There's something off about you." I still myself don't really believe/care about Aspergers, as I have specifically NVLD, however treatment is similar. However, I feel like Aspergers diagnosis are pointless, as it's just observed behavior and the psych's opinion, and my experience with psychs is they'd pretty much all say different and contrary things. I prefer the concreteness of the NVLD diagnosis, as it's tested with IQ tests, and there's a definite cause for it (right brain deficiency) whereas AS is a magical mystery disease that's on a "spectrum" with people who have really pretty different symptoms. Like my NVLD for the most part "acts" like AS, but it can be pinpointed down to specific neurological things, and I believe most other AS people have similar neurological things going on, albeit maybe with different parts of the brain being deficient.

So short answer. Yes.

I haven't been actually diagnosed with anything yet.

I'm almost positive I have AS, as are two of my friends who have backgrounds in working with ASD.

Several of my gradeschool teachers (2nd, 3rd and 4th grade) were pretty sure I had ADD. This was back around 1994.

My mom didn't believe them so I was never tested.

Misdiagnosed with ADHD-PI and put on medication that did more harm than good. I do have some issues with inattentiveness, but they're related more to my anxiety and depression than anything.

I was diagnosed as "gifted and talented" by an educational psychologist when I was 6.

Yes, "social anxiety." Even though I didn't have much fear of interacting with people. I was just totally inept at it. All of my AS traits were known in childhood, but nobody had even heard of AS. An autism spectrum disorder would have never crossed anyone's mind, because nobody I knew was aware that there was such a thing as mild autism.

I was labelled gifted as a kid, though I don't think that's a diagnosis. It gave them something to blame my differences on though, in the 80's when Asperger's wasn't even on the radar.

I've also been briefly diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, which was dumb, because the only thing that fit was self-harm, and my history of anorexia. A BPD specialist removed that diagnosis and then promptly told me she couldn't see me any more. I left gladly.

I've been diagnosed with Bipolar, but that's not a misdiagnosis. I truly have it, and don't doubt that any more.

I've been diagnosed with Social Anxiety as well, but I think that my social anxiety stems from my Asperger's.

Yes. I was misdiagnosed and re-diagnosed other labels, over and over throughout my life. I only took an Asperger syndrome diagnosis seriously because I was surprised I was able to identify with individuals with ASD's.

I've had quite a few visible symptoms all along and everyone just kind of said it was nothing and went along with it. I got sucked into the gifted and talented thing a couple of times, but I faked my way out of it so I could go back to reading my Harry Potter and astronomy books instead of doing projects. :D

I wasn't misdiagnosed, I was just incompletely diagnosed.

(Gifted, Social Anxiety, both are true, though the social anxiety hasn't always been true - it was when it was diagnosed and it is again now)

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was ten and my mom said it was a misdiagnoses because it didn't explain everything. I wonder if everything else was a misdiagnoses too because they also didn't explain everything. I was also diagnosed with autism in my early childhood but that's not really a misdiagnoses since I am on the spectrum. But I don't have classic autism.

But things I have been diagnosed with were true. But my school said I had behavior problems and my mom said I did not and they were wrong.

I am diagnosed with add. My immediate family thinks I have aspergers, a year after I thought I did and kept it a secret. I was misdiagnosed with bipolar in early teens

Yeah, I was also diagnosed with depression, social anxiety, and panic disorder when I was young. When I was older I was also diagnosed with Avoidant Personality Disorder before I found out about AS. (My sister is the one who suggested AS and turned out to be 100% correct)
