Hi everyone i have same problem While there was some hearing loss, it was still within the normal range.

I told the doctor what my family is always telling me, I also have had 2 surgeries on my TMJs so it's possible that that may cause some issues too.

I hear ok in my right ear, volume-wise at least, but it comes through as unconnected sounds -- I have to really concentrate to understand any words. Needless to say, I always put the phone to my left ear.

another bit of weirdness with my hearing: I seem to be able to hear conversations from farther away than others can.

Hmmmmm.... :chin: out of curiosity, do you hold your pencil with the top pointed towards your shoulder, or away from your shoulder? just curious...

another question- do you know how your ability to tolerate loud sounds compares with your acquaintances who are less acute of hearing? IOW can you tolerate loud noise better then the others or worse than the others?

Man, I've had that habit for about a year now! It's annoying me and I don't know how to stop! I keep getting this urge... Wait, popping my ears won't actually make me lose some of my hearing would it?

somebody should interview frequent flier airline passengers for whom ear-popping is a regular occurence. but i suspect that it has less direct bearing on cumulative hearing damage than the regular and prolonged exposure to jet plane/traffic noise would. and tinnitus has a very complicated etiology, not based merely on damage from overloaded hearing mechanisms but on a very serpentine path of causality in the brain between different sections, as well. my ears ring like the aftermath of a myriad of bells having being clapped, but sometimes my brain can tune it out, when it feels like it. :hmph:

I never noticed if the pencil or pen points towards my shoulder -- I don't often write things out. Probably more towards my shoulder than not.

I hate loud noises. I startle easily and I'm easy to find in any fire drill -- I'm the one with my fingers firmly wedged in my ears and a klingon scowl on my face.

Yeah, same here, especially when someone speaks to me when I don't expect it. On some level, I hear and understand what they said, but just can't process it mentally.

I always had problems with my ears growing up. I had ear infections constantly as a kid and still get them every few years as an adult. Loud noises hurt, and music with high pitched noises or fast beats make me very agitated. I basically stick to ambient and soft new age music to keep me calm. I can't comprehend speech if I make eye contact with the speaker. I can't comprehend speech when there are other people speaking in the background, including tv or music with lyrics. I had my hearing tested in an attempt to obtain a noise reduction headset when I worked in a call center, and was denied because my hearing was well within normal rage. I tried to explain that it was my brain, not my ears, but they didn't get it.

the reason i asked that seemingly off the wall question, is that it has been found in a U of W study decades back, that there are general neurological differences in a group of left-handed folk who wrote with their pens pointed away from themselves, traceable to irregularities in the corpus callosum [that thingie that connects/coordinates the left and right hemispheres]. since then, people have been studied to have non-uniform bilateral aural response, who were also found to have corpus callosum issues.

your hearing system's dynamic range [ability to handle soft and loud noises] is shifted towards the sensitive end, meaning you have less "headroom" for the loud stuff. some people have dimished dynamic range on both ends of the volume spectrum, beethoven being a prime example- he was deaf except to loud noises which pained him greatly.

My hearing was fine until I had blocked ears. My hearing then became too sensitive. I then had my ears syringed and still have this problem 2 months later.

I have "selective hearing". Meaning, I hear what I want to hear and can block out the rest. I blame it on AS :D

I wish I could block out noise. I can only tune out people when they are speaking to me.

My hearing fluctuates around the level which is considered mild hearing loss, some frequencies by up to 30dB. This is partly due to issues with congestion which means my eustachian tubes get blocked up. The congestion is a side-effect of one of my meds along with hayfever, I get some good from antihistamines but it can still be a problem. The audiologist I saw said the problems I have are worse than my audiogram would suggest so it's not just my ears. He also said the bipolar and the meds I take from it which affect my concentration make comprehension more difficult and I think I may have some issues with central auditory processing but this hasn't been tested. Several small problems combined make it harder to deal with because there's no one solution.

When I was a kid I had loads of ear infections, one was so severe that my eardrum ruptured and I was profoundly deaf for a day which was terrifying - I woke up one morning and couldn't hear anything and didn't know if I ever would again. My hearing did come back and apparently my eardrum is no longer scarred so there's no long-term physical problem there but I wasn't taking antipsychotics then so one problem has been replaced with another. I love DVDs so much because they usually have subtitles so I don't have to miss anything - I was in my 20s before I found out the correct words to some of the Disney films I watched on VHS as a child. My dad wouldn't allow me to have subtitles on the TV at home because apparently it was bad for me to "rely on them", an unusual benefit of having my own place is I can use subtitles all I want without being yelled at.

I think I have an understanding problem too because I can listen people talking to me but sometimes is like they were talking in another language, the funny thing is that I often get the traslation seconds later (after asking them to repeat or giving a random answer), if I don't I try guessing using the context. I hate when people don't want to repeat what they said :(

Oh my gosh! This happens to me as well; everything you just mentioned. :)
