Music is a really good idea, I didn't know you were allowed to do that! I've tried earplugs before but they don't block out the sound of the drill. I'm definitely going to ask to be kept informed too, find it really panicky when I don't know what's going on. Has anyone had atooth taken out before? How do they do it?
I've had four wisdom teeth cut out, four teeth pulled before I got my braces, and I've had to get two molars pulled because of abcesses that were too bad for root canals. I was asleep for all of them except the last one. I was awake for the last one because I didn't have the money for IV anesthesia. I only had gas, which did NOTHING for me. Neither did the Valium I took beforehand because I knew I was getting it pulled. I was about 35 and my mother drove me to the dentist. To Birmingham. From here. Over an hour away, up that snakey two lane, and her driving scares the piss out of me anyway but it was much worse that day for me. She once actually pulled over and threatened to put me out if I didn't stop asking her to slow down. She was going 65. I know in my head that's fine, I drive that fast on that road. I only have a problem RIDING that fast on that road. Anyway...
They got me in there and xrayed me. Then put me in the chair and he came in. I ran down the speil for him, told him how nervous I was. I didn't have a Walkman or anything then, so no music. He gave me the gas, the max amount he could safely give me because I was nervous. He was very, very nice. He came in and gave me the shots, which I'm not afraid of, but he did a good job without hurting too much and he talked to me through the whole thing. He waited a while then came back and checked me and I was numb. Uh oh, here we go I thought....
He started fiddeling around in there, talking to me the whole time. He told me I'd hear a crack or two, really loud but it's nothing, and I did and thought it was nothing. No pain at all. Then I smelled something horrible and went "EWWWWWW" or as close as I could come and wrinkled my nose. He said "It's just that old tooth, it's almost out. You had lots of infection down in there, that's what you smell" and then he reached back in, pulled out the other piece and rinsed it out, stuck gauze in there and said "OK, you're done!" I was SHOCKED!! ! It was so simple and easy!! ! It only took about five or ten minutes of him actually working. I decided that if I'm paying for the drugs, I can do without them from now on.
I have one now that I need to see somebody about, but with no insurance or money, I can't. It's in the very back on the bottom left. A filling I've had for about 30 years came out partially and there is a big hole in it. This happened at the end of last summer. I keep filling it with the drugstore temporary filling, but this last time it wouldn't stay and it's starting to hurt. I don't know what I'm gonna do, you have to have cash or insurance to see a dentist and there's no dental school near here and the one in Bham has a year long waiting list for it.
Anyway, that's what it was like. The times I was drugged, I don't remember. They started an IV, then I was being put in a wheelchair and taken to the car, then taken out and helped into the house and into bed. Then I was given water and pain meds and slept for about 32 hours. It wasn't bad either

I hate going to the dentist! Haven't been there for almost three years now. Metal against teeth is one of the worst things I know. Only thinking about it makes me cringe. I also hate the fact that someone's got their fingers/hands in my mouth. The sounds are annoying and I don't like the taste of rubber in my mouth. And, when possible, you have to try and make smalltalk which I'm very very bad at.
Despite being taught to brush and floss I spent 7 years in and out of dentist chairs, a basic exam always turned into more. I began to not let on my mouth was bothering me until I was in extreme pain. It never made sense to me to keep going back after the problem was dealt with. I did fine for a while until my wisdoms came in, months upon months of hell, avoiding people and places more than usual, until waking up one morning with a cheek swelled up to the size of a baseball. I go on average 3 years between visits these days. Last experience was horrifying, they switched my dentist to a place where they did like a 2 minute exam and made me wait an additional 2 days to get in at an endo, after spending the weekend in sweating, shaking, moaning and puking good times. Last dentist before was ADD which was cool since we'd compare traits. It's about that time again coming up but I just know they'll yank another one. I just wish I could find somewhere that they need volunteers for implants

I hate it so much. Like 2wheels4ever said, it always starts with an exam and ends with me needing two or three more visits. On top of that, every time I come out dizzy and stiff and cold like a corpse. I don't think I would have as many problems if I went to another dentist. We have really, really, really awful insurance that no one contracts with, and he's the only one in the area who accepts our plan. He's extremely rude and stuck-up, and he always hurts my mouth more than necessary. If absolutely nothing else, it would be nice if I could understand more than 1/3 of what he's saying... I don't want to have to point out this out, though. The last thing I need is to offend him while he has a huge needle in front of my face.
Now that I think about it, I don't think I'll go in for another exam until after we've found a better plan. Thanks for listening to my self-serving rambling.

I have not go to the dentist for 15 years and when I go my leg was shaking by itself. It was in the morning so I blame the weather that it's cold but it could be that I'm afraid of dental stuff and they talk very near me while I lay down looking up... have no idea what they gonna do to me but i know that they just checking.. I was just scarring that they will go ahead and do it without notice although I do know they just checking my teeth.
They got me some blanket after my leg was shaking. After they check up ect.. they suggest to do the procedure next apointment I can tell that the dentist afraid of me to jump suddenly if do now.
I dont have any problem with the noise though. When they putting a crown my mind think about something else and relax.... mind and body relax. it was an hour and a half without knowing and finish with the crowns.
just relax. i did it and so will you.
Oh and whats funny is that the dentist knows that I have hard time sleeping at night.... she says do I have hard time sleeping at night and wake up in the middle of the night thinking of the dentist? I was just uhh mumbling going by the flow "yes yes a little" but the truth is I stayed late till 4am playing video games and on the internet it is like daily routine but maybe she was right maybe deep inside I was scared of the dentist.
Later my crown got loose. So I look at my crown and and clean my crown with some q-tips so the tiny cotton got stuck on it a little. I went to re-crown and the dentist says "oh name dont put in your pocket" she says that cause she probly see the cotton on it thinking it was pocket debris ahahhaha. I'll hand it to her though she knows alot by just looking. She even know that I have not come to the dentist for over 10 years by just looking at my teeth but thats nothing. What i'm impress is she can tell that I have hard time sleeping and she thinks I put the crown on the pocket. She was technically right although not exact. I guess dentist knows about patient too by just looking. I bet she knows I have autism too. she also says I have anxiety when my leg was shaking and I think that's also right although I think that I just have inner cold but I wont be indenial I think its both anxiety and inner cold. I was drinking cold water before coming too.
My dentist is very nice and soft. She knows if a patient is nervious so she talk calmly and nice.
I have autism and I am afraid of people especially opposite sex. My dentist was a female but after a while I got used to her and feel comfortable. She knows how to deal with people.
I would guess I have had more dental work done than most people in this thread. Not cosmetic, either. By this time it's so routine that one time I actually fell asleep in the chair while he was working!
Don't put it off! As fearful as you are, you are better off going every six months to get a cleaning and checkup. It's much better to have a little scraping done than drilling. Catch it before it gets bad.
A couple of suggestions: If you don't want to listen to music (I never did -- too much fiddling with the stations and the sound quality), ask the dentist to tell you exactly what he is doing at every moment.
Here's one I just came up with -- if you find it comfortable, ask if you can wear the lead apron during the entire procedure. It can be terrifically calming. I was always a little disappointed when he took it away after the X-rays were done.

I am given Valium before any dental work and they have to use the novacaine without the epinephrine otherwise I get a very bad physical reaction and my anxiety goes through the roof

On a related note, I have to go get a molar pulled as soon as I can scrape up $250, and I don't know how long that will be. Over a month I'm sure. I am not looking forward to it, but I'm also worried about the pain getting worse before I get the cash. (Our dentist won't work with anybody on payments, he's the only one in town too so he can afford to be that way)
I have a lot of fillings and in the very back bottom tooth on the left side I have one that I've had for about 30 years. No problems, I always ate on that side, everything was fine. Then one morning my daughter was eating Mentos and offered me one. I took it and ate it and about 20 minutes later I noticed a gaping hole in that tooth where the filling had been. No pain at all luckily so I get some temporary filling stuff from the drug store and put that in there.
I have been using that, replacing it when needed because it comes out in tiny pieces gradually, with no problems until last week. It wont stay in anymore, and it's hurting somewhat. I'm not taking any chances between now and then and only eating soft foods unless I just can't resist temptation about something. Either way I will chew on the right side.

I can't stand that flavor, either. It makes me nauseous. For as much as it costs, you'd think they'd try to make it a little more tolerable.
The worst feeling is when my teeth get dry from keeping my mouth open so long. It hurts to the point that I start wondering if they're actually pulling my teeth out.

The first couple times I went to the dentist after not going for a while, my body was shaking for most of the visit. I've had so much dental work over the last few years, though, that I've kind of grown accustomed to it. I've actually had cavities filled without novocain on a couple of occasions. My sister told me once that if you can handle that, you can handle childbirth. Not sure if she was joking; it was uncomfortable, but not unbearable.
My dentist once gave me some laughing gas to calm me before injecting the novocain. It had the opposite effect--I freaked out because I didn't like how it made my body feel.
