IDK if this works for anyone else, but having a cat really calms me when I have sensory overload or when I'm depressed. Like having a cat sitting on your lap or stomach while lying down while the cat purrs just feels nice.

I also saw this girl with AS on youtube talking about how aspies like cats a lot for that reason.

I wish I had a cat but unfortunately it's not a good time:(

I figured out cats helped me long before I figured out I had AS. :) I don't think I'd be sane today if not for my cats. I'm sorry it isn't a good time for you to get a cat. I've spent a few years (1959-1965, 1966-1969, July 2002 - September 2005) without a cat, and that time was pretty dreadful. Well, at first, I didn't know what I was missing, but once I lost my first cat  I've either had a cat - or wanted desperately to have one. A house without a cat is not a home; it's a barracks where you wait out your life until you get a cat. Well, you get the idea...

Yup, cats are necessary :p

They also look like if they have some autistic traits, and it's somewhat more relaxing like that.

I like cats and find them therapeutic. They really reduce anxiety. One of these days I'm going to have to stick a blood pressure monitor on and see if physical tension goes down when I'm holding a cat, because I'm pretty sure it does.

sinking my fingers into, or burying my face in the fur of a purring cat calms me like little else can -- ranks right up there with spinning/twirling for me. But do not try to hold onto the cat while spinning -- cats don't usually like it. :bounce:

having a dog around also helps calm me and make me feel safe.

i love cats. they make me very happy. there are many cats on my walking route and i always say hello and they rub me with their cheeks. i recently started making a photo album of cats i met.

dogs do the opposite. they stress me out very much and i dont like them. i avoid dogs.

Emotional Support Cats are great :D. I do far better with a cat, and have one now. Unfortunately, because she's only an ESA, not a service animal ('cause in the US no new non-dog, non-miniature pony in specific situations animals can become service animals, so the fact that she alerts me to migraines doesn't matter 'cause she's a cat), she's not allowed to go out in public with me.

Either way, having a cat which is legally protected when it comes to living with me is great.

My kitty helps with a lot. She helps me with meltdowns and with shutdowns and with general stress, and with taking care of her helping me remember to take care of myself. She alerts me to migraines... I can't think of everything she does for me.

I had a cat once---when I was little. But...I was allergic to him/her.

I do not cope well without a cat. Neither my cat, nor my roommate's cat are lap cats, but they both sit beside me, and let me pet them. It is very soothing to run my hand through their fur, and cuddle them close to me. My cat also sleeps beside me, right by my feet, and that is super wonderful. I do not sleep as well when I travel and I do not have my kitty with me. They also seem to know when I am stressed and ready to break down, and the cuddle extra close to me.

I love cats because they are as routined as me. At least my cat was. That might have been because I grew up with her though, lol. They aren't loud or unpredictable like a dog, even though some dogs are relaxing too.

My cats help relax and calm me. Burying my face in their beautiful fur or petting them always makes me feel good. And whenever I lay down on my back in bed, one of my two sits on my stomach and chest and purrs until I kick her off (I sleep on my side). And then they both sleep next to me.

I've had them for over 15 years, since I was 8 years old. I don't know what I'd do without them.

Cats are amazingly helpful to me. Right now I don't have any, and won't until I can find somewhere else to live.

Or I could trigger an epic household battle by getting a prescription for an ESA.
