I have a bit of drinking problem and tend to gamble too much. does this have ANYTHING to do with asperger's or is it just that I'm an alcoholic and have a hard time controlling impulses when it comes to wanting to go to a casino and playing blackjack. They're everywhere here in NV.

if i lived in LV i'd probably gamble too much also. in any case, my late father had strong aspie traits and liked to drink and gamble also.

Alcoholism/addiction is not known to have any genetic relation to autism, but it does still happen that you get both genes. I can relate. You might want to take a good hard look at moving, but don't go to Utah- you would have neighbors inviting you to their church and then a couple seconds later ask you to buy liquor for them so they don't get seen!

It has nothing specific to do with spectrum disorders. Lot's of NT's also have these problems. It has to do with poor impulse control, and sometimes with a family based tendency towards such behaviors. That may be genetic, or it may simply be based on upbringing, or perhaps a combo of both.

I agree with John Browning, who suggested moving. You really should move out of Nevada and away from areas with a lot of drinking establishments. I think he's probably right about staying out of Utah. A lot of people probably do try to get others to buy it for them, so the Mormon church won't know they are drinking, even if it's only moderate social drinking. There may also be a lot of pressure to join their church, too.

Yep.

And, living in Vegas probably doesn't help you much.

Have you tried AA or similar?

I suspect myself of having Asperger's and can't stand alcohol. I also have very tight impulse control and live a financially responsible life.

Executive dysfunction (in AS) correlates with poor impulse control. Some individuals with AS may also find managing resources difficult which can be problematic for some. The AS may also lead to repetitive, risk-seeking behaviors. Activities such as video games, hobbies, gambling and drinking can easily become obsessions and ritualized. Best thing to do is remove yourself from that environment, switch to 2-3% beer with a view to drinking less, and channel those gambling impulses into taking on positive-risk activities (which does not involve gambling money)

Wow, you actually put an umlaut on the u in über. You just got about 50,000 respect points from me. On top of what you already have for pointing out some things about absolute pitch to me, and your posts in general.

lol Ironic since you have a Kazuma Kiryu avatar. XD

No, it's pretty normal (or not so for people who don't) to have an alcoholic/gambling addiction with or without aspergers.

I wish you well anyway.

I drink regularly, but not to get drunk. Usually I'll have lets see... About one beer bottle a day? When I want to get drunk though, I hammer them down like it's nothing. 5 or 6 ciders. No joke.

I feel like I've heard something about the anxiety associated with aspergers making us more likely to turn to things like alcohol, but no more likely than NTs with anxiety disorders or stressful lives.

I personally can't find any enjoyment in the chaos that is gambling, though. Even in video games, I don't like to leave my stuff in the hands of chaos.

Also, is it bad that I seem to be stuck reading NV as New Vegas?

See - another thread that has brought up something that is just as known in NT people than it is with anyone.

And a lot of people get addicted to gambling because Las Vegas doesn't make their money just from Aspies.

I'm pretty much an alcoholic and i really don't care. Maybe it could shorten my lifespan which is great coz i have nothing to live for anyway. Besides i can't really socialise with people properly without under influence. When i'm under influence, i can say pretty much everything w/out giving a s^%$.

prego :) to get the umlaut i had to do a websearch to find a printed example to copy/paste, since my copy of windows 7 lacks a character map.
